The Red Ledger, Book 6 Page 10

by Meredith Wild

I’m tempted to make her say it. But it feels wrong and desperate. Plus she’d say anything when we’re like this…this close…climbing fast and hard.

She brings her hand to my face and stares into my eyes, holding me there through the storm of our bodies coming together.

  “I love you,” she rasps.

I wince because I’m falling off the cliff. Even that can’t keep me from challenging her, pushing her to say it again until I can’t ever doubt it. “Do you?”

  “Yes… I do…”

“Then say it like you mean it.”

Her eyes flutter closed. “Oh God…”

I’m seconds away from coming, so I give her everything I have left. Every ounce of my strength and power into her until she moans my name into the air—a long sound that stretches out until we’re both wasted from the rush.

We don’t move for a long time. She drags her heel up the back of my pant leg and plays with my hair lazily.

“I love you,” she mumbles. “I really do.”

When I pull back, her eyes are nearly closed. I get us cleaned up and tuck her into bed to crash from what turned into a very long, eventful, and unexpected night. Once she’s dozing, I slip into the living room with her purse.

A new notification lights up the screen. I swipe it open and read the short reply from the man who’s either trying to steal my girl or get her killed.

  I’ll be there.
