“You’re a worse person than I thought,” she whispers raggedly, but I can hear the excitement.
I feed off of it. “I’m genuinely open to the idea of keeping the plant open. But you need to find a way to convince me that it’s a good decision. I won’t do it out of pity or guilt.”
“As if you feel either of those emotions. I’m not sure you feel much at all.”
“Oh, but I do.” My pulse is tearing through me, leaving all kinds of carnal damage. “You have no idea what I’m feeling right now or how much I want you to say yes.”
She’s gripping the rumpled covers now. “What you’re proposing is an awful deal.”
“Yet it’s the best and only chance you’ll get to help your family, friends, and town, isn’t it?”
She swallows, then whispers, “Fuck you, you monster.”
I laugh. “Fucking is only part of what I’m proposing. But I guarantee you wouldn’t regret saying yes—to fucking or the rest of this deal.”
As she leaves me on the hook for the next few seconds, I feel as if my body might rip itself apart in agony. If she doesn’t say yes…
To hell with that, because I know she’s going to say it.
“So what’ll it be, Heavenly?” I whisper. “Yes? Or no?”
