The sixth book in the Eastern Sierra Brides 1884 series:

  Luck Joy Bride

  By Zina Abbott

Luke McDaniels, known to the locals in the Eastern Sierra-Nevada towns as “Shorty” Mackey, thought he was signing up as a cowboy for the fall round-up when Charley Jardine hired him. He was gathering up cattle, all right, but Charley was rustling, rebranding, and selling the stolen herds. When Luke tries to claim what is owed him and break free, Charley holds his pay, threatening to name him as the rustler behind the missing livestock.

After Charley overhears that a large sum of money will be traveling by stagecoach with a Chinese prostitute back to her tong owner in San Francisco, he comes up with a plan and hires known bad man and fellow cattle rustler, Tex Wilson. Charley promises Luke he will pay what is owed him and cut him free—after one last job.

After her father died in China, Loi Ling was sold by her uncle who had not approved of her parents’ decisions to stop binding her feet and educate her at the English missionary school. Loi is destined to work as a prostitute to pay her passage to America. She has been sent to Lundy to service the male Chinese population—and the occasional white American. Lundy is dying due to the May Lundy Mine closure, and now, her tong owner in San Francisco has ordered her and her earnings be returned to Chinatown.

Shorty waits in the camp hidden in the mountains south of Bodie that he had been ordered to set up for a long stay. Only after Tex dumps the small Chinese woman at his feet does Luke learn just what Charley has in mind for his last job before winter sets in. Can Luke protect Loi from her two captors and the tongs who want her back? Can he protect his own heart from the beautiful, exotic woman who has nowhere else to turn for help?
