When she leaves, I grin at Jace, “She didn’t mean here, Bayleigh.” He laughs.
“Oh, come on, we can be quick, right? I don’t even have to get undressed,” I say, ripping the gown off.
“Oh my God. Have I told you how much I love you?” he asks, smiling.
CHAPTER 28
It’s been a long couple of days, but when we pass signs for Binghamton it feels like coming home. It’s been so long since I’ve seen the mountains, I’ve missed them. Some of the shock has worn off, and now we’re just deliriously happy. Scared still, I mean, twins, but we’re so happy. When he called his mom from the hotel, I could hear her and Alex screaming all the way in the bedroom over his phone, and he was in the kitchen. I was even more shocked when I discovered his phone wasn’t on speaker.
They might be a little bit excited. We haven’t told Ben and Toni yet, because he wants to see their faces. We’re going straight to his house, our house. I’ll get used to that too. Ben and Toni are going to meet us there. I hope I don’t embarrass myself. He keeps telling me I’ll love it, and I’m sure I will, but I know nothing about it. All I know is his mom said he built it himself, Alex said it’s beautiful, and Ben said he could see how much he loved it. What was it he said? Every nail, every molding, was done with love? Something like that.
I’m glad it’s still light out. Lost in my own thoughts, I didn’t notice when we switched roads and I have no idea where I am. It’s a narrow road, and it seems to go on forever. It’s like a tunnel, with the trees meeting in the middle above the road. With all the snow, and so much green, it feels like a wonderland. It seems familiar, but I don’t think I’ve ever been here.
He keeps looking at me, and I feel like I’m missing something. “Are we almost there?” I ask.
He grins. “Well, technically, we are here. This is our land.” When he says ‘our’ I get chills. He’s so all-in it still blows my mind.
“We are? When did that start?” I ask.
“When we turned onto this road. Don’t worry, I’ll show you around whenever you want. There’s a lot of land here.”
“Really? I didn’t know that! I always wanted to be somewhere where you couldn’t see your neighbors. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it that way. I don’t mind if there are neighbors.” I say, backpedaling.
He laughs, “Unless you’re talking about animals, you aren’t going to see any neighbors.”
I don’t even care what the house is like. It’s already a dream come true.
“Here we go,” he says, and I look out the window as the trees give way and it opens up.
“Oh my God. Is this a joke? This is really your house?” I ask, hand over my mouth. This can’t be happening. He puts the truck in park, unbuckles, and leans over to me.
“Nope,” he says and I feel awful. I just got so excited and I should have known better. It’s the log cabin he took me to the day we went to the pharmacy and did the fence. The one where he had to pick something up.
He gets out of the truck, as I try to stop feeling like the horrible person I am. He opens my door, and holds his arms out. I’m so confused. I don’t want to get out at these people’s house. He reaches over, unbuckling me himself, and pulls me out of the truck. “What are you doing, Jace? I just want to go home.”
“You are home, Tiny.”
“What do you mean? You just said this isn’t your house.” I’m not sure if it’s pregnancy hormones or exhaustion, but I’m so confused.
“It’s not my house. It’s our house. All of ours,” he kneels down in the snow and kisses my belly, and I stare at him, speechless.
“You’re home!” Ben yells, as he and Toni come out of the house. She runs towards me, “Giiiirl, you have won the fucking lottery! This place is amazing! You got a hot guy, a really hot guy, a sweetheart of a hot guy, this… mansion, and you’re having a baby. I want to be you when I grow up.” She says, hugging me, and I laugh. She’s right. I have nothing to fear anymore.
“Yep, all of that, except we’re having two babies,” I say, giggling, as I hold up two fingers.
Ben and Toni look back and forth between me and Jace, then start laughing. Toni picks me up, hugging me, and I squeal. “I am so happy for you, Bay! And for me, cause I’m going to have two, did you hear that? TWO babies to spoil!” she squeals.
Ben takes me from her, hugging me tight. “You did it, Kayleigh. Kayleigh and Race – happily ever after. I’m so happy for you, kid.” I can’t answer him, I’m so happy I can’t speak.
He sets me down, kissing my forehead before turning to Jace. They slap each other on the back, while Toni jumps up and down, holding my hands.
They’re right. I have everything I’ve ever wanted, and I couldn’t be happier. All it took was a little bit of faith.
