This first overseas campaign by an air force might reasonably be likened to sending an army abroad with rifles, machineguns and shell-firing artillery less than eleven years after the invention of gunpowder; or a fleet of destroyers and cruisers to sea as short a time after the launching of the earliest sailing vessel.
