The pillows propped her up and she leaned back against them.

He pulled his hair back into a ponytail. “I want you to watch.”

Evie swallowed hard. She wasn’t sure she could look at him, let alone make eye contact while his head was down there.

Lyle lifted her leg onto his shoulder as he lowered himself onto his stomach. He nibbled the inside of her thigh. “You smell good.”

  She closed her eyes. “Thanks.”

  “Look at me.”

  “I can’t.”

He licked that spot between her leg and her pussy. “Why not?”

  “I just—”

“It’s hot to watch.” Lyle slid a finger inside her. “Relax and enjoy it.”

Evie gasped and her toes curled, bunching up the bedspread.

“You’re so wet.” He pulled his finger out and replaced it with his tongue, darting it in and out, circling the entrance to her pussy.

“Oh, God.” Her hips moved against his face. Evie opened her eyes. One of her legs was draped over his shoulder and the other he held against the bed, keeping her open.

He licked up her slit and made contact with her clit. Lyle sucked the hard nub, just enough.

Evie’s legs trembled. She was going to come already.

Lyle slid two fingers into her and stroked her insides. She moaned and watched him. He looked up and their gazes locked. He was right. Watching him do that to her was hot as hell. He kept his eyes on her and used two fingers to spread her lips apart. He slowly worked his tongue around her clit. It pulsed in response and her heartbeat hammered. Lyle sucked a little, then licked again, alternating. Seeing the soft wetness of his tongue slipping over her flesh was almost too much to bear.

Evie panted and put her hand on the wall above her head to steady herself. “I’m…I’m…God. I’m…”

“I know.” He rammed his fingers deeper inside her and curved them up toward her stomach.

Her pussy contracted and her clit throbbed.

Right on cue, Lyle sucked her clit and her eyes rolled back. She grabbed his hair, pulling it out of the ponytail and wrapping it around her hands. Evie moaned and ground her pussy against his face, her chest heaved. She’d never come so hard.

Lyle kept at it, sucking, licking and finger fucking her through every tremor and pulse. He pulled her down onto her back and crawled up her body, layering kisses over her ribs and stopping to minister to her breasts. He gripped her thigh and pulled her leg up around his hip. He pushed just the tip of his cock into her and moved it in and out slowly. “You’re still tense.”

“It’ll stop in a second. That orgasm was really strong.”

He smiled and slid in a little deeper. “Fuck. You feel incredible. Tight. Hot.”

The friction was intense and Evie took a deep breath, her fingers gripped his shoulder, the muscles bulging where he bore his own weight above her.

“Does your arm hurt? I didn’t even think about your injury.”

“What injury? That’s the last thing on my mind, baby. I just want to be deep inside you.”

“I want that too.” Evie lifted her head to kiss him and bit his lower lip.

Lyle growled against her mouth and rocked his hips hard, burying his cock deep.

Evie cried out and dug her fingernails into his skin. His hair hung forward around his face and tickled her neck. Lyle was a lesson in learning what she had been missing, that there was more to sex than just biology. Communicating with bodies was an art form and something she’d never done before.

Lyle stabbed into her again and again using a little more force each time until her head was almost hitting the wall from the strength of his thrusts. She lost all inhibitions on being quiet and moaned, long and loud.

“Yeah. Do that. I love the way you sound.” Lyle dipped his head down and sucked on her neck. “I want you to come with me.”

  “I want to.”

Lyle pulled out of her and jerked her body lower on the bed. He arranged her legs over his shoulders and guided his cock back inside her. He held one of her legs and pressed his thumb to her clit and massaged it slowly while he moved inside her. “How’s that? Feel good?”

“God, yes.” Evie slid her hand over her breast and played with her own nipple, pinching it between her thumb and finger.

“That’s fucking hot. I’m not going to last long with you doing that.” He continued to ram into her and stimulate her clit.

“I’m close. So close.” The first sign of her orgasm was that familiar tightening in her lower belly. Her legs tensed up.

  “There it is. Yes, baby.”

His cocked swelled inside her, stretching her. Her breath caught in her throat and her pussy squeezed his dick. Lyle gritted his teeth and Evie trembled as they came together.

Lyle rolled over to his side. “Damn. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have to leave.”

Evie got up to use the bathroom. She hadn’t really thought about where any of this would lead. She wasn’t expecting a relationship but there was a burn in her belly that made her feel alive and she was afraid of walking out of that room and never feeling it again.

Evie had bared more than her body to him and she couldn’t take it back. She couldn’t reverse the feelings bubbling inside her. She wasn’t looking for a marriage proposal, she’d only known him for two days but it felt like she’d known him forever.

She stared at herself in the mirror. What did he see in her? Lyle didn’t need her money, not that she was rich but she did okay. If it was just sex he wanted, any girl at the party would have served that purpose with no questions asked. The whole situation panicked her. She needed to stop before she lost herself in the lust, before she lost herself in him.

Evie splashed water on her face. “Calm down, weirdo. You’re having a fling. Nothing more. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy what he can do to you. But prepare yourself that this is it. After tomorrow, you’ll never see him again.” Water dripped off her nose and she nodded at herself. “Got it. The heart will not get involved this time.”

She dried her face and opened the door. Evie found her panties and t-shirt and pulled them on and crawled back into bed with Lyle.

He kissed the top of her head and pulled her to lay her head on his chest. “You tired?”

  “Yes. I am.”

“Let’s sleep then.” Lyle switched off the television.

Feeling his heart beat against her face, she fought the urge to say I love you. That would be a surefire way to make sure he was gone before she woke up.

  Chapter Four

The phone buzzed against the tabletop next to the bed. Evie blinked and leaned up on her elbow. It was still dark in the room but the clock said it was after ten in the morning already. She looked at her phone. Nina was texting her.

“Dude. I have so much to tell you. Are you still with Lyle? Of course you are. We need to have lunch or something. Better yet. Call me.”

Nina texted like she talked; in fast run-on sentences.

Evie texted back that she’d call her in a few minutes.

Lyle was still sleeping soundly and she got up quietly and pulled the bedroom door closed. She put the coffeepot on to brew and called Nina.

  “Hey, Evie.”

  Hi, Nina. What’s happening?”

“Don’t make small talk. How was it?”

Evie laughed. “How was what?” The sugar bowl was still out from yesterday’s breakfast and she spooned two spoonfuls into a mug. While the coffeepot brewed she started unloading the dishwasher.

“Lyle. How was Lyle? I bet he’s great in the sack. Jesus, he’s all muscled and big and…he’s big, isn’t he?”

“Nina!” Evie feigned indignation in her voice.

“What? Don’t tell me you’re not going to share this with me. I will die. I have to know. Just tell me if he has a big dick.”

“I’m not telling you that.” Evie’s face burned.

“I bet you’re blushing. That answers my question. He surely does.”<

  “You’re awful.”

“Come on. You never talked about guys like that? Like back in high school?”

“I wasn’t having sex in high school.”

Nina’s voice went deadpan. “Say what?”

  “Not until college.”

“How many guys have you slept with? Including the lead-freaking-singer of Downside?”

Evie’s mouth twitched. “I’ve slept with plenty.”

“You’re a bad liar. Please tell me you didn’t just lose your virginity to Lyle.”

“God, no. I’ve slept with four men.”

  “Including Lyle?” Nina asked.

“You’re trying to trick me into admitting something.”

“You already admitted he had a big dick.”

  “I did not.”

Nina huffed into the phone. “Lyle is like six-foot-six. Dude has to have a huge dick.”

Evie decided to turn the conversation on Nina. “Why don’t you tell me about Carl’s penis? Is it big?”

“Oh my God. Yes. He has a great dick. I’d say about seven inches, just thick enough. Perfect for being on top. You know, if it’s bigger than like eight inches, it hurts to be on top.”

Evie rubbed her eye. “Okay. That’s more than enough information. Thank you.”

  “You asked.”

“Yes, I did. I should go. I think Lyle’s up.” Evie poured coffee into her cup and added some creamer.

“Okay. Well, enjoy that hunk of man meat while you can. I’ll catch you later.”

Evie laughed. “Okay. Talk to you soon.”

She was sitting at the table in her underwear and t-shirt when there was a knock at the door. Evie scrambled to the bedroom to find her shorts. On a Sunday morning the only people who knocked on her door were Jehovah’s Witnesses and she had no desire to discuss religion after having sex all night with a guy she just met.

She peeked through the window. Two men in suits stood on her doorstep. The radios attached to their waistbands told her they weren’t there to preach the gospel to her. Evie unlocked the deadbolt and opened the door.

The taller of the two flashed a badge. “Ms. Brant?”

  “Yes.”

“I’m Detective Jacobs with Long Beach PD. Is Lyle Crane here? We need to speak with the two of you.”

She ran a hand through her tangled hair. Nothing like freshly fucked hair on a Sunday morning. “He’s here. Um, come in. Let me get him.” She pointed towards the couch. “Have a seat. I’ll be right back.”

Evie jumped on the bed and shook Lyle’s shoulder, careful not to grab his bandaged arm. “Lyle. Wake up. The police are here.”

He groaned and rubbed his eyes. “My fucking arm hurts. Jesus.”

After all the stress he’d put on that arm last night, Evie wasn’t surprised he was hurting now.

Lyle rolled out of bed, gloriously naked and sporting a raging hard on.

Evie cleared her throat and pointed at his erection. “You can’t go out there like that.”

Lyle looked down and then smiled at her. “You’re right.” With a few long strides, he rounded the bed and backed her up to the wall. He grabbed the waist of her shorts and yanked them down. Evie thought she heard the fabric rip. Lyle kissed her and his hand snaked under her shirt and teased her nipple, pinching and pulling on the hard peak.

He licked two fingers and slipped them between her folds to rub her clit. With feather soft strokes, Lyle put just the right amount of pressure on her. “You want to help me with this little problem?”

Evie gasped and nodded. “I wouldn’t call it a little problem though.”

Lyle lifted her off her feet and wrapped her legs around his waist. With a hard thrust, he drove inside her.

She tangled her fingers into his hair and pulled. Evie moaned and he covered her mouth with his, swallowing the sounds she made. Every different position he fucked her in exposed her to a new sensation. Normally, she needed her clit stimulated to come but not with Lyle. His dick was magic. It had to be because she was going to come already and she didn’t really care that the cops were sitting in her living room waiting for them.

Lyle moved faster once her pussy clamped down on him. It didn’t take long for him to groan and grind against her. His heat filled her and he sucked her tongue before gently setting her back on her feet.

Evie stood still, trying to catch her breath.

“That’s the breakfast of champions.” He kissed her cheek. “Now we can go talk to five-o.”

Evie touched her hand to her forehead. She was a little embarrassed to go back out to the living room. What if they’d heard what she and Lyle had been doing?

Lyle washed his face and pulled his jeans on. “Hurry it up, missy.” He swatted her on the ass and winked.

“Go ahead out there. I need to use the bathroom and then I’ll be out.” She cleaned up and put a bra on before joining Lyle and the two officers. “I’m sorry. My stomach is a little upset this morning.”

The younger cop smirked. “No problem, ma’am.”

Lyle reached for her hand. “Come here.”

Evie sat down beside him. “So, what’s going on?”

“We want to show you some pictures and see if you recognize the woman who shot Mr. Crane.” The policeman handed her a plastic sleeve that contained six different pictures of women.

Evie immediately pointed to the top right picture. “That’s her.”

“Are you sure?” the officer asked while making a note on a small white card.

“Yes. I’m sure. She had a gun pointed at my head. I’ll never forget her face.” Evie’s voice broke and she bit down on her lip to keep from crying.

Lyle put his arm around her and squeezed her shoulder.

Evie looked from one officer to the other. “Have you caught her?”

“We have her in custody, yes.”

Air rushed out of Evie’s lungs. The news was a big relief. “Thank goodness.”

“You’ve both positively identified her as the shooter. You may need to appear in court but we’ll let you know if the case will go to trial.”

Evie sat up straight. “I don’t want the prosecutor making a deal on this. I want that crazy woman to do time. She’s dangerous.”

“Ma’am, we don’t have any say in how the prosecutor handles the case. We just pass along the evidence.”

“I know. I know. I just…I don’t want to have to look over my shoulder all the time.”

“I’ll make sure you’re safe, Evie,” Lyle whispered against her ear.

The policemen stood up and Lyle walked them to the door. Pleasantries were exchanged and Lyle closed and locked the door. He sat back down beside her. “I meant what I said. I won’t let her hurt you. I promise.”

Evie wiped away a tear that slid down her cheek. “You can’t be here all the time, Lyle.”

“You’re right but we’ll make sure she goes to jail. Okay?”

  “Okay.”

He looked at the clock on the wall. “Is it time for my antibiotics?”

“Yes. You need to eat with it. Let’s go in the kitchen.”

Lyle sat down at the table and rubbed his arm. “You know I lost a part of the heart that was tattooed right here? Guess I won’t be wearing my heart on my sleeve anymore.” He laughed.

Evie poured him a glass of cranberry juice and popped the top off his antibiotic bottle. She shook one out into her hand and gave it to him. “What would you like to eat?”

He grabbed her hip and pulled her onto his lap. “Don’t you think I’m funny, Evie?”

“It’s difficult to find anything funny right now. I’m sorry.”

Lyle wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t apologize. It’s been a fucked up couple of days. But you know what?”

  Evie curled into him. “What?”

“I’m glad I got to spend this time with you.”

There was safety and comfort being held in his arms and Evie didn’t want to think about how she’d feel when he lef
t. “Me too.”

Lyle rubbed a hand over her hair and kissed the top of her head. “I’m glad they caught her so you don’t have to feel afraid anymore.”

The fear of being killed was only second to the fear of not being loved. She wasn’t only stressed about what had happened with the psycho chick but also that since the woman had been arrested, Lyle didn’t have a reason to stay now. Evie didn’t want him to leave. Most of her adult life, her relationships were failures for one reason or another. She picked the wrong people but for the first time something felt right. Being curled up against his strong chest with his lips touching the top of her head felt like the place she was supposed to be. What if he left and she never knew what it felt like to be wanted that much again?

  “Are you crying?” Lyle asked.

  “No.”

  “Why are you sad?”

“I’m not.” That wasn’t true but she didn’t want to lay a guilt trip on him over her own insecurities.

“Don’t lie. Do you think I can’t feel the tremors in your body? You’re on the verge. Tell me what’s on your mind.”

  “I can’t.”

  “Evie, look at me.”

  She tilted her head up.

“What are you afraid of?” His eyes were a lighter shade of green in the daylight. Like the sun shone behind them.

Evie bit her lip and looked at the clock on the wall. “I’m afraid of how I’m going to feel when you leave. I know this is just a freak of circumstance that you’re here in the first place. Things like this don’t happen to me.” She touched his chin. “Guys like you don’t happen to me.”

“So, you think I won’t come back?”

“No. I don’t think you will.”

“You are a woman of little faith, Evie.”

“I’ve never had much to believe in,” she whispered.

“I’m always up for a challenge.” Lyle slid a hand down her back and squeezed her ass.

She laughed in spite of herself. “I don’t think I can handle another round.”

Lyle stood up and carried her with him.

Evie wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Like I said, I’m always up for a challenge.” He kissed her and licked at her lips. “I’m not proposing marriage or anything, but I promise I’ll be back. And we have one more day before I have to leave. I think you better go ahead and call in sick for tomorrow.”
