“I think you mean one day at a time.”
She smiled, embarrassed by her mistake.
“Anyway, I wanted to give you these.” She held two envelopes. “This one is for your motorcycle. I withdrew it from a black fund because they wouldn’t believe me if I itemized another totaled motorcycle.”
“It was fully loaded.”
“It’s generous.” She handed him the check.
“This one,” she said, holding the other envelope, “is for your services. It would be so much easier if you’d just come back to the Agency.”
Rhys shook his head. “I’m fine with the consulting work.”
She stretched it over to him but he raised his hand, indicating he wanted to negotiate.
“I had a thought,” he said. “I’m thinking the safe house is now pretty useless to the Agency.”
“It’s getting new windows, the bullet holes will be fixed up, and then it’s going on the market.”
“I don’t know the amount of that consultancy check, but if it’s as generous as the last one, maybe you could keep it. Payment can come in another form. I think maybe I earned it.”
He wanted the Almhütte.
“Aren’t there too many bad memories attached?”
“I’ll build new ones. I might never make it back to Dixville Notch and I still like the mountains. Seems like a pretty good place to watch a sunset.”
