Epilogue
“My name is Linh, I’m nineteen years old, although I could be older . . . time’s a funny thing.” I said, speaking to the assembled group of mystics and passionate seekers.
“By now, you know the story of Nathan Ryder and what he sacrificed for the Movement, what he gave to us.” I self-consciously pushed my long dark hair from my face. “Nate knew he was going to die that day and with all his powers, he knew it couldn’t be avoided. His knowledge had reached the point where he could do more for our cause on the other side of the veil.”
Booker, standing in the back, looked up from his texting and nodded. Those first moments after feeling Nate’s change, when I begged death to take me too, Rose reached across the astral and insisted I wait. Within hours, Booker arrived, scooped me up, and we flew to Cervantes. Yangchen and Rose were there ready to . . . save me. I too had known Nate would die, but thought I’d learned enough and seen too much that death didn’t matter. Reality had other ideas; the loss even now is unbearable.
Those women showed me much on Cervantes, but until I heard Wandus in the waves I didn’t fully comprehend what had happened. “Nate led the Movement through the revolution,” the ethereal voice said in that wonderful Indian accent. “He fulfilled his destiny and now he will help you fulfill yours.”
Someone in the audience cleared his throat and brought me back to the present. “Many of you have heard the legend of the Jadeo and are asking if it was real.” I looked into the front row at Spencer and Yangchen; she smiled radiantly, but Spencer’s health had not been good, and we didn’t expect him to live much longer. “That such a thing could exist was mindboggling, but it was very real. I remember when Nate first showed me the little gold box and we didn’t know what it was. We tried to open it, obviously unaware of what was inside.”
I sipped from a glass of water. Nate had been dead for three months and I still got shaky talking about him. “When I later learned that the Jadeo contained the last breath of the last shaman who possessed every soul-power and full knowledge of his soul, I didn’t understand that through Airgon, it could be passed to whoever inhaled that breath. Once I understood that, I was left with fear and hope for the future. If the right person took that breath, he or she could teach the rest of us how to return, and instead of it taking millennia, we might do it in a generation – that was Nate’s hope. But if the wrong person got hold of it . . . well, Nate made sure that didn’t happen. The Jadeo ended the day Nate died. But we have it within us to make the changes needed to bring our world from dystopian to utopian.” I looked up and saw Rose beaming; she had helped me every day since Nate’s death. I’d also worked a lot with Clastier, but it wasn’t the same as being with Nate.
I’d been voted leader of the Movement a month earlier and needed to update everyone on our efforts at reforms. Nothing would be the same; plans to end poverty, hunger, disease, hate and fear were well underway. Obtaining power from fossil fuels was banned, even wind and solar were only going to be transitional as Lusans would provide all we needed for free. I was in the middle of explaining the complete removal of the old financial system when Spencer interrupted me on the astral.
“I know who Helen Hartman is,” he said. Spencer had been devastated by Nate’s death, not because of the loss of his friend – he knew he’d see him again – but because of the loss of the Jadeo, so I wasn’t surprised he brought up the only name on the list of the nine that had never been identified.
“I’m sure you do,” I said. Dunaway was also in the audience. I looked over to see if he was listening in, but he seemed to be only hearing my talk on dismantling the current healthcare system.
“You, my dear Linh, are Helen Hartman.”
“When did you figure it out?” I asked, falling for his trick and confirming what, until then, had only been his suspicion.
“The question, Linh, is how long have you known?”
“I discovered Helen and I shared a soul through the Outviews that Nate and I had about Nares and Bola. But the Movement could never find her because years ago, she fought against Omnia’s corruption, changed her name and went into hiding. Eventually they found and murdered her.”
“So you, Linh, as the leader of the Movement, are the one who sent Nares from the past to fight Omnia in the future?”
“Yes.”
“But why couldn’t you tell us?” He coughed.
“Because to reveal the future at that point would have prevented it and the Movement would have lost.”
“I understand,” Spencer said. “There were millions of courses the future could have taken and only one which allowed the Movement to defeat Omnia.”
“Yes,” I said to Spencer, and at the same time, I explained to the gathering how borders had been eliminated. “The battles we’ve won are still being waged . . . the past is never completed.”
“You know I am dying,” he said. “And Lee was killed the morning after Nate, so that leaves you as the final survivor of the nine entrusted.”
“Yes,” I agreed, knowing where he was going.
“The Jadeo survived, didn’t it?”
I looked toward Dunaway again, as the only living member of our generation’s seven. He should have led the Movement but stepped aside and nominated me instead. I was sure Nate had told him who I was, but he never wanted to talk about it. Dunaway and I were planning a trip to the Taos Mountain portal, after the gathering, to seek our own eleven years with the Dark Mystic.
I stared directly into Spencer’s eyes and let him see the answer to his question, then concluded my speech with a quote from Nate, “Everyone exists only in your imagination. And you exist only in theirs. Therefore, you are all other people whom you encounter, and they are you. Does that knowledge change how you think, feel and act toward others? It should . . . it should change everything.”
