Curse Breaker (Phoenix Throne Book 7): A Scottish Highlander Time Travel Romance Page 25

by Heather Walker

When she came back, she found him breathing in that deep, rumbling tide that told her he was sound asleep. She crossed her arms and watched him for a few minutes. She loved him now more than ever, and that concern on his face when he mentioned her getting pregnant stabbed her heart.

He wanted to rebuild the Tower House the way it was before this curse devastated the island. He wanted to fill it with voices, starting with those of their children.

Alexis’s hands migrated to her stomach. Why hadn’t she told him yet? She couldn’t understand her own behavior, especially when she knew how much this meant to him. She would have told him tonight if he hadn’t fallen asleep.

She sprinkled the rosemary over the vegetables and gave them a stir. She was in no particular hurry to finish cooking the meal, now that he was asleep. She ought to wake him up and put him to bed in their tiny room behind the kitchen. It used to be the cook’s quarters, but they made it comfortable, just the two of them. It would serve until they got the rest of the castle rebuilt.

She wandered out into the night. She took a shawl from the peg by the door to keep out the rising wind. She walked out to the rocks by the sea and inhaled the powerful salt breeze. From here, she could see the tiny square of light that was her kitchen door.

This wild coastline, this broken-down castle—the whole country was hers alone, hers and Christie’s. Lachlan let them do what they wanted. He left the whole southern part of the island in Christie’s charge.

Her old dead self dissolved in the breeze and left this burning, living soul connected with everything and everyone in her Clan. Even in her long dresses, in her kitchen, and in her everyday chores, the wildness of her wolf self enlivened everything she did. Nothing could ever tame her again.
