An Interrupted Cry Page 10

by Laura Anne Gilman

They saw themselves out of the building, leaving Linder sitting on his sofa, surrounded by gleaming chrome and leather, sunlight streaming in through the windows around him. The lobby hummed with electronic noise and energy: power was back on, New York was once again filled with neon and glare. Ellen felt herself relax a little more, sensing the stream of current running like lifeblood through the city’s veins. She didn’t need it, but if she did, it was there.

She glanced sideways at Danny. His hair was even more a mess of curls than usual, without his usual baseball cap jammed down on his head, and she could see the faintest tips of his horns peeking through, the creases in his skin where exhaustion was catching up with him, and something else, something deeper than sleep deprivation, darker than anger.

“What’s going to happen now? Will the PUPs do something?” She had no idea what she thought that might be.

He closed his eyes briefly, not missing a step. “What we do, Shadow, what the PUPs do…. We’re about cause and action, about laws and culpability. But that’s… all new. It’s not how the Cosa Nostradamus worked, historically. We act, and we react.”

“Danny.” She reached out, her fingers curling around the rough fabric of his sleeve, halting him mid—step. “What are they going to do? The Council, and… What are they going to do?”

He didn’t answer her, and after a minute, she let go.

This story, and this series, could not have happened without the enthusiastic support of Kickstarter backers, who told NY publishing that yes they DID want more Cosa Nostradamus! Thank you, so very much.
