It Had to Be You and All Our Tomorrows

Distance insulated Michael from the harsh reality of his mother’s condition. Nor did he seem to want to acknowledge it when informed. Can you think of any instances in your own life when you didn’t want to face a difficult situation? Why not? How did your faith help you it address it?

As a youngster—and even into adulthood—David admired his outgoing older brother. But it can also be difficult to live in the shadow of a successful, popular sibling. Have you ever experienced this in your life? How has it affected your relationship with that sibling?

Following his mother’s death, David reevaluates his life and takes a job where he hopes to improve lives, not just balance sheets. In explaining his decision to Caroline, he quotes Mother Teresa, “God has not called me to be successful, God has called me to be faithful.” Why does it often seem difficult in today’s society to follow this call?

In All Our Tomorrows, the Uplink board is nervous about reaching out to inner-city students like Jared. Yet David is convinced that those are the students most in need of the organization’s assistance. All of us are faced with risky choices in our lives, choices that have great potential for good—but which can also backfire and do irreparable harm. Have you ever faced a situation like that? What did you do?

David and Caroline are struck by Jared’s hope-filled photos. Why do you think Jared was able to hold on to hope despite his dismal surroundings? What role did his grandmother play in his attitude?

Jared pursues the Uplink internship despite the risks and threats. What gives him the courage to do so? How much impact did others’ belief in him have on his willingness to persevere? Discuss examples from your own life where perseverance reaped positive results. How has your relationship with the Lord been a source of courage?

At first, Jared’s grandmother is too proud to ask her sister for help when Jared needs a place to stay. Only when she realizes that asking for help is the best way to express her love, is she able to put her pride aside. What does the Bible tell us about the danger of pride? How can pride get in the way of our relationship with others—and the Lord?

A number of the characters have to deal with relationships gone awry. David and Michael experienced a rift; Jared’s grandmother and her sister are estranged; Caroline and David start out on shaky ground because of resentments and misunderstandings. How might better communication have affected these relationships? What are some of the hallmarks of good communication?

In the end, both Caroline and Jared find their way back to God. Discuss their journeys and the factors that helped lead them home. Do any of their experiences parallel your faith journey?
