Frederick’s head began to swim.
Father wouldn’t kill him. He needed Frederick, needed his ability, his resources, his ties to Icky.
Frederick clung to that as darkness began to crowd his vision.
“You are going to use every tool in your arsenal to separate Quentin from this American he is bedding. Control his mind, use your own American, do everything that you can to tear them apart. Destroy Riley, and you will destroy Quentin’s will. You must sever his ties to that dreadful country and give him no reason to remain.”
It grew harder to concentrate on breathing. Frederick blinked slowly.
“Bring him home, Frederick, or I will do to you what I am instructing you to do to Quentin. I will ruin Brennan. I will wreck his mind and his body. I will devastate him until he is nothing but a shell, and then I will move on to you, because if you fail me again then it is clear that you will never succeed at this task, and there will be no further need to keep you around.”
The weight lifted, and Frederick gasped for air so fast that the sudden flow of oxygen made his head spin.
“The choice is yours.” Father returned to his seat as though he hadn’t just threatened to kill his own son. “Break Quentin, or I will break you.”
Frederick stared at him in horror, unable to hold himself back. “Why? Why go to all this trouble? Why would you kill one of your own children over this?” He sucked down air. “Why is he worth more than me?”
The duke placed his hands on his blotter and looked Frederick right in the eye.
“Because he can learn magic,” he said simply, “and you cannot.”
Frederick’s heart sank. As with most choices in life, there was no choice here at all.
He had to force Icky’s hand if he was to save Michael.

   MORE FROM AMELIA FAULKNER
Amelia Faulkner was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, and sprouted upward in short order. The ground around Thame is reasonably mucky, especially in the winter, and she can’t be blamed for wanting to get away from it.
Raised on a steady diet of Star Trek and Doctor Who, Amelia stood no chance in not becoming a grade-A geek. She has sat on the board of the British Fantasy Society, contributed fiction and fluff to various published roleplaying games, and written non-fiction for SciFiNow and SFX Magazines. For every positive there is an equal and opposite negative, and Amelia is forced to admit that she loves Wild Wild West.
In her spare time she enjoys travel, photography, walking her Corgi, and trying to convince her friends to replay the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game with all the Goblins decks.
