“I came to cheer you on in your New York Fashion Week debut. I’m so proud of you,” I confide, taking her hands in mine. “There isn’t any other place in this world I’d rather be than here with you.”

She knits her eyebrows together and she gives me a half-smirk of a smile. “What? You don’t believe me?” I ask.

“No, not really. The way you’ve acted over the last few months leaves me with a tremendous amount of doubt,” she admits.

“I know. And starting today, I’m going to work hard with all my heart and soul to make it up to you,” I promise her. I lead her over to the audience area, and pull out a chair for her to sit on. “You see, Cassee, you remind me so much of my mother. She was a great woman; a kind and generous soul who was my whole world. She loved my dad for some reason, ignoring the blackness in his soul. She died a lonely and sad woman because of that darkness. When you wanted to come to the club, I was afraid that I’d take your goodness from you. I was afraid that I’d darken your soul, just like mine is.”

“No, Mat. You don’t have a dark soul. You’re a good and loving man,” she says, twining her fingers with mine. She squeezes them tight, and pulls me closer to her. “You’re my favorite human.” She reaches up and presses her lips to mine briefly. I feel her smile spread across my lips.

“Please say you’ll come back to Miami with me and give me a second chance. I can’t live without you, Cassee. I love you.”

“Yes. I still want the “more” that you promised, and you have the rest of our lives to give it to me.”

“Gladly,” I say, leaning in and kissing her lips, thoroughly devouring them until she opens to me. I am content, taking in the innocence and goodness that is Cassee. She’s mine and I’ll never take that for granted again. “Thanks for not giving up on me, Cassee.”

“I love you, Mat. At times, it felt like you would never come around, but I wasn’t giving up. Some people are worth waiting for.”
