  Chapter One

“We’re getting more complaints about the man in room two fifteen.” The speaker passed her up walking quickly. There was a problem in the main sitting area of the hotel, and she was going to solve it. Skye gave a deep sigh before she walked back into her office.

The man in two fifteen had done nothing to bring attention to himself. So why were her guests complaining about him? He got up in the morning and went down to one of the three restaurants in the hotel for breakfast. He never bothered anyone. He did have a tendency to watch the females, as each one passed by he looked a bit sadder. It was like he was looking for someone special.

Then he went out, but he never seemed to stay too long. When he came back, he sat in the lobby for a while before going back to his room and repeating the routine for both lunch and dinner. She knew because she watched him every opportunity she got. She even sat outside his door a few times to see if he was violating their policy by making too much noise. Nothing, but certain guest still complained about him. She was beginning to wonder why.

She was sitting in front of a bank of camera’s in her office when his door opened. Her tongue came out to moisten her bottom lip without realizing it. Maybe her guests were scared that their women would leave them for this man. As far as she was concerned, that was a very real fear. He was tall with a swimmers build. She knew if he took those clothes off he would be a beautiful work of muscle and power. Her tongue darted out again. His light brown hair was a contrast with his deep tan. He must live in one of the warmer states. His eyes were such a light brown that they fascinated her. If she didn’t know better, she would say they glowed, but that had to be a trick of the camera.

No, the guest in two fifteen wasn’t a problem or a threat unless you added her sanity and her rapid growing desire for him then yeah he was a real threat. Not that she thought for a minute a man who was proportioned perfectly would be interested in a plus size female like her. Not just plus size she turned her head to look in the mirror, but one with a streak of gray hair going down the right side by her ear.

Pain lanced her heart as she looked at her reflection. The dyes she used to hide the gray became less effective every time she used them. The professional dye jobs weren’t working anymore either. She had dyed her hair two weeks ago, but it looked like dye had never touched it. It had been hard, but she was coming to the realization that she would have to live with it. So no she wouldn’t be attracting the man in two fifteen. Not that she wanted to, she assured herself. With a shake of her head, she turned herself away from the camera and went back to work.

She had just picked up the first form that needed to be filled out when she caught Nathanial trying to sneak through the lobby avoiding the cameras. Instead of having someone pick him up and kick him out she waited. There was no doubt where he was going.

The door knob to her office turned but didn’t open. She had a happy moment when that happened. It had taken her a while to get used to locking the door behind her and sometimes she still forgot but not today.

Finally, there was a knock at the door.

  “Who is it?”

  “Skye, it’s Nathanial.”

Nathanial who didn’t have permission to use her first name but did it anyway. She hit the button on the bottom of her desk that would bring the security guards. It wasn’t like she was scared. She was scared, some days she was terrified. He was a stalker, and she was his victim.

Getting up, she went to answer the door. “You shouldn’t be here. How many times have I told you I’m not interested?”

“Skye, you have to hear me out. This is going to happen whether you want it to or not. If you give in, I swear I’ll make it painless.”

Why couldn’t he be a regular stalker someone who was saying he would love her forever? She wouldn’t be less scared, but she might think she had a chance. His brand of crazy was over the top even for a stalker. He wanted to kill her, talked about it like it was inevitable. She had gone to the police several times, and he even spent time in jail, but his threats were eventually ruled the harmless ramblings of a mad man, but she knew better.

“The time is almost here. He demands your power. There is no way you will be allowed to unite with the dragon.”

And there it was the madman part that finally made the courts stop listening. He never touched her only talked about how she would have to die for her own good and the good of the glorious new world.

“Skye.” He took a step towards her, and she backed up as two security guards flanked him.

“Mr. Bell you shouldn’t be in here. Per the court, you’re not allowed to be in this hotel.”

He turned bright blue eyes on Andre. “I just want to talk to her, try to get her to understand why she must die. It’s not for me, I’ve argued in her defense, but he insists. Either she allows me to perform the ritual on her that will cleanse her soul and allow him entry into the world or he will send others after her who will cut her down in the street and laugh. I can’t let her die like that.”

  “I’m not dying, period.”

  He turned sad eyes
on her filled with pity.

Andre grabbed him by one arm, and Steve took the other.

“If you come back in here I swear I will have you locked up until the day after you die. Then when I’m sure you’re not coming back, they can bury you.”

“Skye!” he screamed as they dragged him out. “I’m only trying to help you.”

Thanks, with that type of help my life will be over in a blink of an eye. She ran her sweaty hands down the side of the slacks she was wearing before she went and sat back in her chair. She was the manager in charge of this hotel it would be inappropriate for her to sit in the corner, wrap her arms around her legs and rock. How she wished she was ten again.

She picked up the form she dropped when Nathanial tried to open her door. These forms won’t fill themselves out she reminded herself as she attempted to get lost in work.

  *~*~*~*

Zeno took the elevator down to the first floor where one of the three restaurants in the hotel was located. This wasn’t the one he liked to eat breakfast at, but he decided to change his routine today.

Coming here seemed like a good idea at the time. There was no way he was going to find his mate in Dragon Cove and Eternity the goddess of the plane after death had pointed him in this direction with a few interesting words. He might have laughed if he hadn’t been there and seen how his brothers mate almost died.

The longer he stayed in this hotel, the more convinced he became that she was here, but it had been two weeks. How could he have not seen all the females in that time? He gave a small shrug as he walked into The Strange Place. That was the name of the restaurant. This hotel sat on an ancient burial ground that was here before the time of the Indians. It spanned back to the time of a very powerful people the remnants of who lived on the island with him. Their spirits and the power they still possessed kept this place safe. The humans didn’t know it, but they felt it.

He took a seat at one of the tables that would give him a view of the staff as well as the customers as they walked past. He liked the inside of this place although he liked their lunch the best. It had a warm cozy feel the chairs were done in a dark blue and were thick and comfortable. They made you want to stay a while. The tables were a warm wood, and there was a fireplace. At times, it felt like a home away from home.

“Hi, what can I get you?”

He looked up into the face of a waitress he had never seen before. Was she a dragon mate? Something about her pulled at him making him uncomfortable. He wasn’t sure what she was, but she wasn’t his mate.

“I’ll take a glass of orange juice as well as a glass of water. Then I would like your stack of pancakes, two eggs over easy, your breakfast steak the twelve ounces please and hash browns.”

“I always did like a man with a good appetite. I’ll be back in a few with your drinks.”

  “What’s your name?”

  “Willow.”

“I’m Zeno nice to meet you.”

He would have to tell Syn and Zeno about her when he got home. She was setting off sparks, but he didn’t know why. That was the downside of this hotel as long as you were in it, no one could get an actual read on what you were. Maybe he should arrange to meet her outside? No, he gave up on that idea he needed to find his mate that’s why he was here.

There was a possibility that he might not know who she was when he met her but he dismissed that thought. He had been waiting a thousand years he would know who she was.

He thanked Willow when she brought his drinks and then his food. Eating slowly he watched as each female passed by him, he tasted the air around them and watched how they moved. Mostly he paid attention to his dragon who wasn’t perking up when any of the females crossed his path. Finally, he gave up and paid the bill. How much longer would he be able to stay here?

He walked down the grand staircase into the lobby to see two guards escorting a man out.

His eyes narrowed as his nose took in the scents in the room. He knew that stench, the man reeked of contact with Mutufa.

“No! Hell, no, you can’t have her. You won’t defeat our glorious plans.” Nathanial went crazy fighting against the guards.

The guests moved over. Parents clutched the hands of scared children, while women tucked their purses closer as the men in their lives tucked them closer.

He watched the actions of the human men and gave his head a small nod in reaction to them. Tuck your females close and guard them they are irreplaceable. He followed the man outside curious to see what the guards would do with him. They didn’t let him go until they escorted him several blocks down the street and warned him not to return.

Zeno stayed in the shadows even as the man’s eyes sought him out.

“I know you’re here,” he whispered low enough for the guards not to hear him. They turned around and left.

“I’ve been tasked with making sure you don’t find her. It won’t matter even if you do. I already have everything I need in play. Soon she will be the last sacrifice for Mutufa, and when he comes back, he will bring her back with him and then she will be mine.” He laughed with an edge of insanity.

Zeno slipped away without alerting the man to where he was. Eternity was correct. His dragon mate’s life was in jeopardy he had to find her soon.

  Chapter Two

Skye stood up with a stack of forms clutched in her hand. She had no idea why the owners of the hotel demanded that everything be done on paper when it would have been so much easier to do them on the computer. They interviewed her for the position once. She had been invited to their house it was old enough to be creepy. They were pleasant enough, looked to be around her age, but they acted older like they were from a different century.

At the time, she hadn’t cared as long as she got the job and she still didn’t care. It just made her life harder when she had to run the forms down to the purchasing department. She snickered Lisa was the purchasing department, but she liked to be called the director and Skye humored her.

Unlocking the door to her office, she peeped into the hallway before exiting. Nathanial wouldn’t come back today. So far he only came around once a day, but that didn’t stop that little voice in her head from telling her to be cautious. He was becoming bolder and more desperate at the same time.

Not wanting to take the time to walk the long way around to Lisa’s office she decided to go through the lobby. That way she could get a feel for how the day was going and how the guests were acting. She loved this hotel the lobby was wide and spacious filled with soft, comfortable chairs some of them way older than she was. The check-in desk was placed discretely to the side, it was cherry wood that gave the sun a run for its money when it came to shine. The rug was thick and soft as opposed to bland and serviceable. There was a grand staircase that took you up to the first floor. There were also two restaurants on that floor. One to the right the other to the left. The third restaurant was to the back of the hotel on the lobby level.

  “Skye.”

She turned to wave at whoever was calling her, but her eyes got tangled up in his. The man from two fifteen, she couldn’t breathe as her feet took her in that direction. Realizing what she was doing, she tried to stop walking lost her balance and watched as she fell towards the ground. He scooped her up and stood there holding her in his arms.

She heard multiple gasps. They were probably stunned by how fit he was to be able to hold someone her size. Her head nuzzled into his hard, warm chest before she could stop herself. Now she was gasping as she looked for a way out of his arms. How embarrassing! He would probably tell his friends about the clumsy, large female at the hotel where he was staying.

“I’m sorry.” She said it softly not wanting to let the rest of the lobby in on her already mortifying predicament.

“I’m not, I’m glad I was there to catch you when you fell.”

Her cheeks were turning red. “You can put me down now I realize how heavy I must be.”

“You’re not heavy, but I will put you down if you insist
.”

“I insist.” Stupid, she said to herself. Why insist you’ve been secretly lusting over him for two weeks and now he was holding you. Holding. You.

She kicked that voice that was usually helpful to the curb as she stood on her two feet.

  “Thanks.”

  “Your welcome.”

“I should probably get going. I have to deliver these forms.” They were clutched tightly in her slightly sweaty hand. Lisa would complain about it but too bad. She looked at the beige walls of the lobby instead of in his eyes. He still had a hand on her arm stopping her from leaving as surely as if he handcuffed her.

  “Have you eaten?”

“What?” She looked up into those brown eyes of his. They still seemed to be glowing without the benefit of the camera.

“Lunch. I haven’t eaten I was out longer than I anticipated and I was wondering since I did keep you from falling to the floor if you wanted to have lunch with me?”

Did he want to eat her? Wait…no. Bad libido. He wanted to have lunch with her. Was he sure?

“You want me to buy you lunch as a thank you?” What else could he want? Hadn’t she already ruled out the possibility of him wanting to spend time with her?

“No, I want to buy you lunch.”

Like a date? Down girl, it had just been a while since anyone had taken her out or bought her anything. If a man even thought he might want to look at her, somehow that crazy Nathanial found out and scared him away. This would be nice, and no one was here to scare him away. But she was at work. Was this against the rules? She had to eat, right? And if they ate in the same place at the same table who could say it was wrong? Grrr she was going to have to force herself to get out more.

“I haven’t eaten. There’s a restaurant on this floor towards the back. I could meet you there after I deliver these forms.” She gestured to the hand that was still clutching the papers.
