Diamond’s eyes widened in disbelief as her hand slowly lifted to cover her open mouth. No, this isn’t happening. This man is not proposing to me!
But he was.
“Diamond, I love you. You are more precious than your namesake, more valuable than any jewel. I didn’t know true love until you walked into my life and I’ll never know true love again without you. You saved my life, baby, in more ways than one. Will you do me the immense honor of becoming my wife? Will you marry me?”
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a blue box, opened it and, amid gasps and sounds of impressed approval, placed a perfectly designed five-carat, princess-cut Tiffany diamond on her finger.
The room held its breath.
Diamond smirked. “What? No rooster?”
“Rooster?” Papa Dee exclaimed. “What is that child talking about?”
“It’s a private joke,” Jackson replied, his smile slight as he continued to gaze intently at Diamond, waiting for her answer.
“Well, go on, girl,” Dexter prodded. “Don’t keep the man hanging all day!”
Diamond could barely speak for the tears. “Yes!” she finally whispered. “A thousand times, yes!” she continued with increased volume. She leaned over and hugged the love of her life.
He stood, picked her up and twirled them around. “I love you, Diamond Drake.”
Diamond placed a soft kiss on his mouth. “I love you, Boss.”
And as her family applauded, Diamond recognized two things—with big risks came big rewards, and dreams? They really could come true.
