She rushed over to her phone. When she saw the caller ID, her stomach tightened. It was her former boss—the one who found bodyguard jobs for her. She and Bevon had discussed what she was going to do with her life. Money was no longer an issue since he had plenty for ten life times, but she missed the work.
“Hello?”
“Well, well, I thought you’d been kidnapped or something.”
That was funny. She hadn’t mentioned anything to her boss about her job to kill Bevon, nor about mating with him. “Just took a break for a bit, but I’m back now.”
“I have a job for you.”
Excitement charged through her, but then the reality kicked in. “How long is it for?”
“Just three days.”
“Days, nights, or both?”
“You can have days if you want. Is there something you’re not telling me?” Her female boss was quite intuitive.
“I have found my mate, and I want to spend as much time with him as possible.”
“That’s wonderful, but you still want to work, right?”
“Yes, but less frequently,” Zulema said.
He understood that she might miss having her own career and encouraged to take a few jobs here and there. Besides, there would be times when he had to do Feyrion business, too.
“I can make that work,” her boss said.
When she hung up, Zulema couldn’t help but smile. Bevon came over to her. “I can see you’re happy. Tell me all about it.”
“I agreed to do a small job. Three days max—and only during the day.”
“That’s great.”
“Thank you. Before I go back to work, I thought we could take a little trip.” She’d found this delightful little lake. While it wasn’t as spectacular as the one she’d seen on Feyrion, this one was deep, and Bevon could benefit from learning how to swim in his dragon form.
“I’m game.” He turned back to Thane. “We’re going to go. Zulema has something planned for us.”
“No problem. Next week, the guardians are doing some mock battles, assuming you two want to join in. I’ll warn you it will be quite competitive.”
“If Finn is there, I’m in too.”
“Oh, he’ll be there for sure.”
“Then you can count on us,” Bevon said.
Once they stepped outside, Zulema faced him. “I thought it might be fun to go for a little swim. Afterward, who knows?”
He grinned. “You are a temptress.”
“We’ll see. Ready?”
“Always.”
They stepped away from each other and shifted. Seeing Bevon in his dragon form never failed to excite her. She soared upward, and Bevon followed.
“Where are we going, exactly?” he telepathed.
“You’ll see.”
He flew next to her for the half hour trip. The scenery wasn’t as richly intense as that on Feyrion, but it was still beautiful. When she spotted the water, she dove straight for it. Bevon would assume they’d land on the beach, strip, and swim, but that wasn’t what she had in mind.
As she neared the surface, she tucked in her wings and dove straight in. The liquid cooled her heated body.
“Can dragons swim?” Bevon telepathed.
“I hope so.” Of course, she was kidding. “Use your tail for propulsion.”
A huge splash rippled the water next to her. Ouch. Bevon’s wings weren’t tucked in as close to his body as they should have been, but he’d figure it out in a moment. Because she was in a sassy mood, Zulema circled him, loving the freedom of the water. Being able to hold her breath for a long time was an added bonus.
“This is fun,” he relayed.
Bevon caught on so fast that soon he was swimming around her. Wanting a bit more of Bevon, Zulema shot out of the water and zoomed upward. Once she was mostly dry, she found a perfect spot on the sand to land.
A moment later, Bevon was beside her. Because they were alone, she thought this would be a good place to enjoy each other. “How about creating a dome around us for privacy?” she asked.
He shifted. “Why don’t you try it?”
Zulema had tried a few things, but her abilities were sporadic. They both hoped that with time, she would be as powerful as him. “Do I just sweep my hand in an arc and mentally picture the bubble?”
“It’s a bit more complicated. I’ll do it this time, but only because I want you too much.”
“I like the sound of that.”
Once the bubble was in place, she quickly divested him of his clothes using her newfound magic.
“My turn.” He swept a hand, and a moment later, she was naked. “I like it. I can’t imagine how talented our children are going to be.”
Her pulse skyrocketed. While she’d quickly agreed to moving into his cabin in the woods, they hadn’t discussed much else. “Our children? How many are you planning on?”
He shrugged. “Ten or twenty should suffice.”
A laugh burst out. “With just me? Or are you going to hire a gaggle of women to help produce and raise them all?”
He swept a hand and created a large blanket on the beach. “Perhaps I was a bit overambitious. What do you say we try for just one first?”
“Now?”
“Absolutely.”
Life with Bevon Forrester was going to be one adventure after another.
