“Guilty as charged,” Bradford said and kissed her forehead.

“I am so happy for both of you,” Sophie said. “And for Clay. He’s two for two now.”

Bradford sought Clay out in the crowd and nodded his thanks to him. Clay’s answering smile meant the message was received. He couldn’t have imagined ever choosing to spend time with Clay, but Clay had invited him to meet some of his Gold Star families and it had been a moving experience. There were so many really good people, proud people who wanted to work but needed just a little boost to get back on their feet. Clay might be a bored man entertaining himself by meddling in other people’s lives, or he just might be a good man with more money than he knew what to do with, who was always looking for ways to make the world a better place. Either way, he no longer instantly annoyed the shit out of Bradford.

  It was a start.

“I wonder who he’ll choose to help next?” Bradford asked aloud without meaning to.

Joanna answered, “I suggested Aly and Dylan to him.”

Dylan was flirting with one of Joanna’s staff and Aly was clear across the party looking as if she were unaware he existed. “Are you sure a gynecologist belongs with a man who still laughs every time he hears the word vagina?”

Joanna snuggled closer and smiled up at him. “I hear opposites attract.”

He kissed the tip of her nose. “I’ve heard the same thing. Stranger things have happened. I always thought I’d be the one to save you.”

“You were a tough one at first, but I knew I could win you over.”

  “Reluctantly rescued.”

“Hey, that would make a great title for a book. I just might steal it.”

  About the Author

Ruth Cardello was born the youngest of 11 children in a small city in southern Massachusetts. She spent her young adult years moving as far away as she could from her large extended family. She lived in Boston, Paris, Orlando, New York—then came full circle and moved back to New England. She now happily lives one town over from the one she was born in. For her, family trumped the warmer weather and international scene.

She was an educator for 20 years, the last 11 as a kindergarten teacher. When her school district began cutting jobs, Ruth turned a serious eye toward her second love– writing and has never been happier. When she’s not writing, you can find her chasing her children around her small farm, riding her horses, or connecting with her readers online.
