“Me?” He said, his eyes widening in response. He started to object, when Jackson cut him off with a look and a swift shake of the head.
“I trust that you won’t let her out of your sight.” He looked at Lori, who had slumped in relief. My heart almost broke when I saw how the fight seemed to just leave her body, as if she knew she was safe now. This girl was probably the least dangerous thing I had ever seen.
“Lori, I’m willing to offer you refuge in our pack, but know that until you prove otherwise I don’t trust you. However, I’m angry at your pack for how they have treated you and I can see that you are suffering. Isaac will help you and provide you with everything that you need.”
Isaac walked over to Lori and went to take her arm, but she flinched away. He rolled his eyes and just walked away from the party, waiting for her to follow him.
“Thank you,” she whispered, before following Isaac in to the night.
“Okay, back to the party everyone, we’re here to have fun!” Jackson shouted, smiling at the crowd who quickly cheered and dispersed back to enjoy themselves. Jackson pulled me in to his arms and held me close while we swayed slowly to the music playing.
“Will they be okay?” I asked, referring to Isaac and Lori.
“After Tyler, I’m struggling to trust anyone, but I know I can always trust my brothers. I trust Isaac to look after her, but I also know he won’t let his guard down with her. As crap as it is, we need to stay on alert right now with everyone.”
“Maybe they’ll be good for each other.”
Jackson laughed. “Maybe.” We stayed swaying to the music, just wrapped in each other’s arms and I never felt happier. I never thought I’d be glad for my little car to break down in the middle of nowhere; but it turned out to the best thing to ever happen to me.
