Eighteen-year-old, Isabel, is ready to become a wife and had been writing to Adam for nearly a year and one other man as well. Neither Adam nor Levi’s wife are thrilled with the information. Shortly after Adam and Isabel wed, Isabel is kidnapped. Adam takes off to find her, alerting no one. Upon finding his wife, his anger rules him and he kills her abductor. After taking Isabel back home and making her his, the kidnapper’s brothers appear and challenge Adam to a duel. Isabel becomes frightened as they have found love for one another and she doesn’t want to lose him. Her actions are not taken well by Adam and their marriage hangs in the balance.

  DEADWOOD, SOUTH DAKOTA

  1876

  ISABEL

Red dust flies around us as my new husband pushes the horse to nearly its breaking point. I hold tight to his waist as I sit behind him. The man who kidnapped me is trying to make a get away, but Adam is determined to kill the crazy man.

I married Adam on a Tuesday, three days ago. The tall, broad-shouldered man with shortly cropped salt and pepper hair was a pleasant surprise. Being that he was forty had me a little worried he’d have one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel, but that wasn’t the case.

My father passed away last year, and it was my mother who said I needed to find me a husband out west to take care of me. I’m eighteen and green as they come. I suppose that’s why the crazy man kidnapped me before Adam could take my innocence.

Right after our little wedding, I was walking back to Adam’s cabin to change out of my wedding dress and into something more comfortable. That’s when I was grabbed up by this young cowboy, who was clearly deranged. His name’s Paul, but that won’t matter once Adam gets to him. Then his name will be RIP.

He hauled me off to a cave and kept me there for three days before Adam found him. I was lucky to have talked him out of doing to me what he wished to. I was also lucky that just as Paul lost his patience with me, Adam found us.

Adam beat the hell out of Paul and took me to his horse. He was going back inside to finish Paul when the man somehow managed to runout and make his escape. Now he’s chasing after him and the man is riding like the devil is on his heels. Which isn’t exactly untrue.

It took Adam nearly a year to ask me to marry him. I had only one other prospect, and I found out it was none other than another deputy in Deadwood. The town is much smaller than I had imagined. It never occurred to me the two men worked together. He decided on another though. I was slightly disappointed, but Adam is a nice man and handsome.

Levi was the other man who was writing to me. I finally laid eyes on him just before Adam and I were married. When Adam told him my name, his face took on a whole new look of surprise and he began to stammer.

It made me laugh and when I told Adam that we had been writing up until Levi suddenly stopped several months earlier I got a good look at just how jealous my husband can get.

“You just keep away from her, Levi,” Adam had said as he jabbed Levi in his broad chest.

Levi assured him he was a happily married man and would not be messing about with me. The whole thing was embarrassing, but it did stir something inside me for Adam. To be a thing one wants to protect is moving.

Now we ride to catch a man who didn’t have sense enough to leave another man’s wife alone. I almost feel sorry for the idiot, but then I think about how cold I was as I had to sleep on the rock floor of the cave and all the sorrow leaves me.

Red lines run around each of my wrists thanks to the scratchy rope he tied me up with. I shudder as I remember how his grimy hands felt as they ran over my legs as he pushed my dress up.

When I saw Adam’s face loom up behind him I just about had a heart attack, it pounded like it never had before. Then Paul went flying through the air and I was lifted into Adams’ strong arms.

Moments later I was freed from my bonds and flying along on the back of my husband’s horse. We must be getting close to Paul as Adam pulls his rifle from the holster that’s attached to the saddle. I close my eyes as he shoots the loud gun.

The horse slows and Adam grunts. “That’s the end of him!”

I peek around the side of my husband’s large frame to find Paul lying face down in the dirt as his horse continues to run. “You got him!”

“I always get my man,” Adam says as he turns the horse around.

“You don’t think you should take him back or bury him or something?” I ask.

His head shakes. “Nah, let the buzzards have the bastard.”

Laying my head against his muscled back I feel odd. My husband just killed someone for doing something to me. I have to take better care of myself, be more diligent in watching my surroundings. I have to make sure no one grabs me up again or it will lead to their death.

He pulls one of my hands from his waist and his warm lips touch it. “I hope you’re okay, darling.”

“I will be, once I get a hot bath and change my clothes. My wedding dress is ruined, and I really had intentions of keeping it and handing it down to my daughters.”

“Our daughters, you mean,” he says as he kisses the palm of my hand, sending chills through me.

  “Yes, our daughters,” I murmur.

Now for the really scary part, making love for the very first time.

  ADAM

Married three days and I’ve yet to make my wife mine. We ride back to Deadwood after I killed the man who dared to take her from me just after we had wed.

Isabel is a tiny beauty. Long, blonde hair and sky blue eyes she has. Ivory skin, that’s so soft it feels like satin. I want to run my hands all over her small body. Though tiny in stature, her breasts are full and show promise of still growing. Her bottom is well rounded as well.

She’s a young eighteen. A few say she’s too young for a forty-year-old man, but I am not one to listen to nay-sayers. Though young in years, Isabel has an old soul. Her letters to me were cleaver, and she’s more than ready to become a wife and mother. Her young spirit is something I have dreamt of. To have her in my bed was a thing which ran through my mind often as I read her letters.

I wrote back a few things that some might have found inappropriate, testing her sexual prowess. She didn’t stop writing me when I did. She actually was quite free in telling me it was her wish to please me in the bedroom. She wrote it was a thing she looked forward to as she was as innocent as they come and ready to be done with that.

Her arms hold me tight and she lays her head on my back. Her breasts are crushed against me and have me craving her even more. But her ordeal was long and terrible and I want the doc to look her over. Her health matters to me and I’ll push my need for her back until I’m sure she’s unhurt and ready to come into my arms and my bed.

Town finally looms in the distance and I think Isabel may have fallen asleep behind me. Her body leans as heavy as her tiny body can on mine. I run my hand down and rub her leg which she kicks.

“No!” she shouts then pulls back from me. Her breath goes ragged in an instant and I realize she was having a reaction from her ordeal.

“Sorry, sweetheart. I didn’t mean to scare you,” I apologize. “We’re almost to town and I’m taking you to see the doctor before I take you home and get you all cleaned up.”

“Oh, good. I’m kind of exhausted,” she says and falls back on my back.

It occurs to me she may not have been given much, if any, food. “Darling, did he give you anything to eat?”

She makes a humph sound. “I had a bite of jerky. That’s it.”

I’m so glad I killed that bastard. “I’ll take you to eat at the steak house as soon as we get you seen by the doctor and cleaned up. I’m so sorry that happened to you, Isabel. I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you, I swear it.”

Her arms tighten around me in a hug. “You don’t have to do that. It’s enough for me that you came and found me. Especially before he was able to do anything to me. That’s what I’m most grateful for, Adam.”

Her words send a new round of anger through me that she had to endure the little prick at all. What I did to him wasn’t as bad as what he did to her. I curse him even in death to an eternity of hell and damnation. I pray she doesn’t have nightmares over what he did.

Levi rides up to me, Josh right behind him. Levi shouts out, “Where in the hell have you been, man?”

I rode after the man who took my bride as soon as I saw him riding out of town. No one else really noticed Isabel was being abducted as he pulled her up and had her in front of him. The only reason I noticed anything had happened was because one of her shoes had been left behind as he snatched her up.

Upon looking around I noticed Paul’s horse moving at a bit above normal pace and as he hit the edge of town he hauled ass. And that told me all I needed to know, he had Isabel. I had to run and get my horse and took no time to tell a soul what I was doing, sure I’d be able to catch up to him and get her back. I was wrong though.

“Paul Sampson kidnapped, Isabel,” I tell them.

Levi looks incredulously at me. “You sure?”

“I am. I found them hiding out in a cave. She was bound up, and he was about to take her. I got there in the nick of time.” My body goes red with the heat of my anger at what could have happened had I been ten minutes later to find the cave.

The men fall on each side of me and it fills me with jealousy as Levi reaches out and touches Isabel’s arm. “Isabel, are you okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

“No, I’ll be fine. I just really want a steaming hot bath and…”

Levi interrupts. “I’ll get Nora to make you one. Adam, you are taking her to see Doc, right?”

I try hard to stow my jealousy and have to grit my teeth to answer him. I know he’s trying to be helpful, but the fact the two had been writing to each other before I asked for her hand in marriage and Levi asked Nora to marry him instead of Isabel is a sore spot. “Of course I’m taking her to see Doc, Levi. And I can make my wife a bath.”

“I know you can, Adam. But while you two are at the doctor’s office I can have Nora go to your house and get the bath ready for her. She might want a woman to talk to about what happened as well, don’t you agree?” Levi says, making complete sense and that further enrages me.

“Fine! Have her do it!” I take off away from them.

“I’m sorry, Adam. I’m sorry about ever having a thing to do with Levi, I really am,” Isabel’s sweet voice comes from behind me and I feel terrible in an instant.

My ire dies with her soft words. “No, it’s me who is sorry, darling. It’s me who should’ve been by your side every step of the way back to our home. I’m mad at myself. I’ll never forgive myself for what’s happened to you.”

I stop in front of the doctor’s office and hold my arms out. She slips into them, her weight like that of a bird’s. Her blue eyes look up at me and they’re so tired and now they seem to hold a bit of sorrow in them as well.

Her hand runs over my arm. “Adam, we have to put this behind us. Let me see the doctor, take a bath, get something to eat and I will be a whole lot better.”

Now what can make me feel better?

  ISABEL

The doc found nothing permanent or seriously wrong with me so Adam took me home and that’s where I met the woman who won Levi’s heart. It’s a bit awkward as I did like him immensely and when he quit writing with no explanation it hurt.

She’s pretty at least with long, black ringlets. Nora is small, like I am. I can see why he made her his wife. She smiles at me as I soak in the hot tub she made for me.

“So, Adam, huh?” she asks. “How long did you two write to each other before he popped the question?”

I’m not sure if I should divulge the information about Levi and I writing and how I was hoping for a proposal from him. So I decide it’s not a good idea. She did ask an exact question after all. “Nearly a year.”

“Did you have any other prospects?”

The way her eyes level on mine make me think she may already know, so I just bust out, “Levi was the only other one.”

  She did not know that!

Her eyebrows just went clean up to her hairline. “What? My, Levi?” Her voice very shrill and her hand goes to her throat. “I had no idea.” She stands and paces. “This is unsettling. He never told me of anyone else.” She sits on the edge of the bed and looks at me. “Do you still have the letters he wrote to you?”

“No, I left them back at my mother’s. I thought it best not to bring something that might make my husband unhappy. I probably shouldn’t have told you.” I go under the hot water in embarrassment and guilt.

When I come up Nora is staring at me. “Tell me all you can remember. Tell me every detail you can. I have to know. I have to know if my Levi ever loved you.”

I shake my head. “Obviously he never found anything about me to love, Nora. He did ask you to marry him and left me hanging with no idea if anymore letters were ever going to come from him again.”

She stands and turns away from me. “He didn’t let you know he’d picked someone? It makes me wonder how many other women there were.” She spins back to me. “And you, how did you feel about not hearing from him? Did it crush you? My God, it would’ve killed me if I had never heard from him again.”

“Obviously I lived.” I laugh and splash some water at her to get her to relax. “Sure it was a little bit sad he never sent another letter. He never answered my last one back. I was a little afraid he was killed. But, it’s pretty clear he fell in love with you, Nora. I’m just glad to find out he’s alive.”

She lightens up a little. “I’m sure you’re right. I’m sure you’re happy to find him alive and we’re having a baby.”

I feel she’s offering that fact as some kind of thing to make me see they’re happy and not breaking up over me. Which I would never have anyway.

“I’m so happy to hear that. How fantastic, Nora. I think it’s best not to have secrets when we all live in such a place as this. Both our husband’s deputies and all.”

She nods. “Yes, thank you for telling me, Isabel. I hope I didn’t come off as jealous. I am anything but that after all. Anyway, Adam is quite the handsome man, isn’t he?”

“He is.” I agree. “And you have to love how he will go all over to find his errant wife.” We both laugh. “I think I’m clean enough and ready to get pretty for my husband. He’s taking me to dinner at a steak house. It sounds fancy. Is it?”

Nora laughs. “You’re from New York, right?”

  “Yes, I am.”

“Then by your standards, no it’s not. They do have this thing called a chicken fried steak that is pretty different but really good. And the cook makes some really good pinto beans, so you should try those as well. But they give you gas, so on second thought forgo the beans and stick with the mashed potatoes.” Nora holds a large white towel open for me.

Looks like I made my first friend in Deadwood?

  ADAM

My wife finally fed and looking much better than when I found her this morning readies herself to come to bed. She’s fussing over her hair and has put on a night dress I plan on ridding her of in just a few moments.

Dinner was quiet, which I like. I don’t like talking when you’re supposed to be eating. And now that I think about it, I don’t like messing about when you’re supposed to be in bed.

“Isabel, you look fine. Come to bed now. My arms are aching to hold you.”

Her cheeks turn pink as she looks back at me and she comes to me as I
ve asked her to. “I’m sorry, Adam. It seems I’m a little nervous.”

I pull the blanket back, revealing my lack of clothing and my male member that is standing at attention for her. Her eyes go wide and she openly gawks at it.

With a smile, I say, “Drop the night dress and anything else you have on and climb into bed with your husband, wife.”

Isabel shimmies out of her clothes and jumps under the blanket so fast I barely got to see her perfect, little body. And I intend on getting a gander at that. I pull the blanket off her and look down at her slim figure.

Slowly I trail my hand over her flat stomach as she trembles beneath it. “Adam, please go slow.”

My eyes level on hers. “I promise I will, Isabel.”

A weak smile she gives me and I know I’ll have a hard time holding back, but I want her to enjoy this. I want her to be happy when we go to bed, not dread it.

Her lips are trembling as well, so I lay next to her and gently press mine to hers to ease the shaking. Her body is cold and needs to be warmed. I move over her as I kiss her. My hands run over her small shoulders and she moans a little and the shaking stops.

My tongue taps at her lips and she parts them for me. She tastes like chocolate and cinnamon and it makes me ravenous, but I keep my slow pace. She twists her tongue around mine and kisses me back which I find pleasing.

My muscles twitch as her hands run over my back. The need for her is growing and I decide she needs a taste of how I can make her feel. My mouth leaves hers and I trail kisses down her neck.

One perfect breast I take in mouth as I run my hand over the other, then squeeze it a bit. Though I could stay for an eternity at her breast I move my mouth down, over her stomach. I reach back and place my hands under her knees.

Her voice tense, she asks, “Adam, what are you doing?”

With a smile, I say, “You will soon see, my darling wife.”

Lifting her knees up, I slide the rest of the way down her body and place my lips on the little bud at the top of her pleasure zone. Her body goes rigid and she gasps.
