“You kissed him,” she said. Zinnie bit her lip and looked away. “I knew it!”

“How did you know?” Lily asked.

“It’s written all over Zinnie’s face,” Marigold said. “You might as well be wearing a neon sign.”

“Really?” Zinnie asked. Marigold nodded. Zinnie pressed her fingers to her cheeks. They were burning up.

“Are you going to write about it in your blog?” Marigold asked.

“Nope,” Zinnie said, and linked her arms in her sisters’. “I’m going to keep this to myself.”

“Except that you told us!” Lily said.

“Yeah, but you’re my sisters,” Zinnie said.

  “So?” Lily asked.

“So she trusts us,” Marigold said.

“Exactly,” Zinnie said, and pulled them both a little closer to her. It was true. She did trust them, with her heart and her secrets. For a moment she could feel the earth under her feet, holding her up as though she had roots, and the sky above her, beckoning her to look up, up, up. She inhaled the summer air and felt so much a part of this family, a part of this world.
