Cody glanced at the trinket. ‘That used to be Dad’s favourite. Mum gave it to him back when they were dating.’ He raised his eyebrows playfully. ‘Seems a long way for it to fall over here. Unless that was his way of letting us know he approves of our relationship. Putting in his two cents’ worth like that racket you heard in the darkroom before.’
Bridie laughed. ‘You sound just like Megz. Although, I hope your dad’s happy, because I definitely am.’
Cody helped her to her feet with a grin. ‘Me too. Did I already mention “happy Christmas birthday”?’
He had. In fact, he’d treated her to a bounty of presents and a big red velvet cake and made everyone sing as she blew out the candles. As Cody snuck in another kiss before they gathered up their sacks, Bridie couldn’t help feeling like all her Christmases had come at once. Running for the hills had been her best idea yet.
