Recipe for Sarah’s Dough Dab
Ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup lard or shortening
5 teaspoons baking powder
Milk
Stir dry ingredients in a bowl with a spoon. Add enough milk to make a stiff dough. Roll out on a floured board and cut into round pieces. Put in a greased frying pan and fry until done. Turn as you would for a pancake. Brown on both sides, then serve as a bread substitute.

The Lehigh Navigation System was completed in 1829, and boats began using the entire length of it by 1832. The canal era reached its peak in 1850, and continued to diminish until it came to an end in 1931. Today, visitors can still experience some of those exciting canal days at the Canal Museum in Easton, Pennsylvania. There’s also a restored canal boat pulled by two mules that can be ridden at the Hugh Moore Park, which is also in Easton. The restored lock tender’s house in Walnutport is another interesting place to visit, and of course, it’s always fun to walk the towpath where the steady clip-clop of mule teams used to be heard. Whenever I’m in Pennsylvania, I always enjoy visiting various sections of the Lehigh Canal and reliving in my mind the glory of the canal era.
