John gave her a gentle smile. “It took me a while, but I remember you now. I should have known when I saw that damn Beetle. He went on and on about that car. But the only picture I’d seen of it was smudged and water-stained, and you couldn’t have been more than three or four when I came to the house. But Derek was so incredibly proud to have a daughter.”
Marigold wept, though she tried to hold it in. When she’d come here looking for John, some part of her had hoped that he would remember, but he never said anything. “You remember my dad...”
He nodded. “I do. He was a fantastic guy. A true, honorable Marine, and I was privileged to serve with him. He talked about his baby girl all the time, and his beautiful wife. I remember him talking about being worried about who she was going to date and hanging onto the car so that he could teach her to drive a stick...”
Shannon handed Marigold a pile of Kleenex to wipe the fresh tears from her face. Her makeup was fucked. “My Grandpa taught me,” she said when she’d gotten some control over herself.
“Well, if it counts for anything, I approve of you being with Logan, and I know Derek would have loved him, even though he’s Army.”
Marigold snorted, shaking her head, full of so much emotion... “Thank you, John.”
“Maybe, if you, uh, get married,” he shifted in his chair, looking uncomfortable. “Maybe you’d let me walk you down the aisle.”
The damn tears were back, more than ever. She nodded, mopping her face, and leaned over to let him hug her. John Palmer didn’t deal with emotion very well and he was still a dick, but he gave great hugs. “It’ll be good practice for when you walk your own little girl down the aisle,” she mumbled.
John and Shannon shared a sharp look, and Marigold laughed. “Do you really think I didn’t notice the nausea and the tiredness? And all the little shared looks?”
Shannon grinned. “We’re trying to keep it under wraps for a while. And we don’t know that it’s a girl.”
“What’s a girl?” Logan asked, walking into the reception area.
“John and Shannon’s secret baby,” Marigold told him before they could tell her not to.
Logan was more concerned with her tears. He crossed the floor and cupped her face in his hands, setting his crutches to the side as he leaned on her desk. “What’s wrong?”
“John remembered my dad.”
Knowing it was too girly but unable to help herself, she let Logan hold her as she wept some more. The emotions flowing through her had no beginning and no end, they just kept bouncing between one another. Sorrow, pride, love, joy, appreciation, loss, surprise. Everything was there, and Logan’s arms gave her a place to deal with them all.
“I love you, Logan,” she whispered.
“I love you too, baby,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
