“You look cute, bitch,” Yari said walking into the room. She stood flawlessly in a tight, white mid-length dress with gold accents to match her gold Louboutin pumps, and her hair fell in a waterfall of waves. Even tipsy, she refused to look like anything other than perfection.

“When’d you get those?” Yari asked admiring Trina’s shoes.

“A couple weeks ago. I grabbed them cause they were only like $700. They’ve just been sitting in my closet though. I forgot all about them.”

Trina and Yari spent the next hour putting the finishing touches on their makeup. M.A.C. Cosmetics covered their faces with strategic shimmery highlights and bronzed contours. Just as she was finished, Trina walked over to her jewelry box and pulled out a ten carat diamond choker. The light in the room illuminated the pure stones.

“You getting real fancy just to be going to the club.”

“Bitch, shut up and take a shot. Let me worry about me, okay? Thank you,” Trina said as she slid on the matching diamond arm cuff, “You ready?”

“Yeah, my clutch is downstairs. Should we bring the bottle?”

“No, Ron probably has some drank with him.”

“Is he on his way?” Yari asked examining her makeup one last time.

“I texted him earlier while we were swimming to let him know what time to be here, and he said okay.”

“Ooohhhh, I wish Omari wasn’t gonna be there tonight. I would be all over Ron’s fine-ass.”

“Yari, chill with that. Ron is off limits. We’re gonna go out tonight and have a good time. I do not need to be dealing with anymore bullshit.”

“Whatever, bitch, let’s go,” she said rolling her eyes as she made her way down the stairs.

“Ron just texted me and said he’s outside,” Trina said a few seconds later grabbing her house keys from off the kitchen counter. They click clacked across the marble floor as they headed for the door. When Trina opened it, Jonah was standing their dressed in a navy button-down shirt, a pair of black slacks, and a pair of Armando Cabral loafers holding a bouquet of pink and purple amaryllises.

“You look beautiful,” he said picking up her hand before he kissed it, “Ay, Yari, we got the limo and everything. Omari’s in the back.”

“Well, I guess that’s my cue,” she said never taking her eyes off Jonah as she walked past him. She was amazed by his unfamiliar gesture.

“What’s all this for?” Trina asked smelling the haze of pink and purple flowers.

“I was hella mad at you last night, so that’s why I left. I thought that after all this time, you would know off top that my children are the two most important things to me, and they come second to nothing or no one.”

  “I do…”

“Trina, let me finish. I now realize even more than before that Renee has it in her head still that you’re just some bitch I’m fucking and that we’re eventually gonna get back together. I wanted to get her a new car not only because your crazy-ass busted a brick through the windshield, but also because we had been talking about it for a minute. She thought her car was too small, and she needed something bigger for the kids. You may have not understood why I was gonna buy her a new car, but to me, it was for my kids, and whatever they need, I gotta be there to provide it for them. She only gets them on the weekends right now, but I want her to feel like she’s still their mother. That’s something that I never wanted to take away from her, but us getting back together isn’t gonna happen whether I’m fucking with you or not. I’ve been outgrown Renee. I have no intentions on looking back.”

“I do understand that your kids come first because you are an amazing father, Jonah. I was wrong, but I want to apologize. I shouldn’t have let that bitch get me out of character cause I knew then that that’s what she was trying to do.”

“Don’t fall for it. You’re here because I want you here, okay? You’re not going anywhere, and neither am I,” he said wrapping his arms around the small of her waist.

“Well, why didn’t you call me all day?” she asked punching him in the chest.

“I went over to Mar’s this morning before I went to link up with Renee. I needed him to get some things together for tonight, and I knew Yari’s ass was gonna tell you she saw me as soon as she talked to you. I ain’t gon’ even lie I was still hot about the situation, but I needed to talk to Renee about everything. We had a long-ass conversation, and I just laid it all out there. After we got the car, and I got everything situated, I got your text.”

  “And?”

“And I want you to tell me in person what you said,” Jonah said moving in closer.

“I love you,” Trina said with no hesitation as she stared in his eyes.

“I love you too.” He picked her up and spun her around and around. “It’s about time, blood. I didn’t think you were ever gonna say that shit.”

“That’s not something that I just throw around, Jonah, so you should feel very special. I’ve only said that to one other person.”

“I’ma act like you didn’t just say that and pretend that I’m the first if that’s okay with you?” he said kissing her again, “But fuck all the drama. There will be no negativity tonight. We’re going out to support my nigga Dre. We got the drive tomorrow. It’s gon’ be a cool little weekend.”

“So what’s up with Monday? You know I’m going, right?”

“Not tonight, Trina. We’ll talk about business later. I promise. Now, let’s go.”

Trina followed behind Jonah hand-in-hand as he led her to the black stretch limo he rented for the night. When they got inside, she saw Yari all hugged up with Omari, and Reko, Ron, and a couple other niggas from Rich Gang has some females beside them too.

“Ayyy, what’s up, Trina?” everyone went around and asked. The blue transformers they had in their system had them all turnt up.

“How ya’ll doing?” she asked as she poured herself a glass of D’usse before she sat back. With Jonah by her side, she was finally able to breathe again.

Forty-five minutes and a couple empty bottles later, they arrived at club Lux. The Rich Gang had niggas from all walks of life affiliated, but they made it a point to support each other.

“What’s up, playboy?” the security guard standing in front asked as he opened the door letting Jonah and his team pass the line.

“Ain’t nothing, man, how you been?”

“Chilling, I need to get at you later tonight though.”

“Oh, fa sho fa sho. I’ll be around, blood,” Jonah said escorting Trina inside.

When she walked into the club, the room was all black with many gold accents. Sacramento got a bad rep when it came to black owned establishments, but DeAndre wanted to do things a little differently. He believed in his city, and he wanted to bring a little more class back to it. Club Lux’s grand opening would be a night to remember, and with the party being invitation only, he just hoped everything went according to plan.

“Ay, we over here,” Jonah said as the music blared through the speakers. Before they could make it over to their section, another guy grabbed him and whispered something into his ear. Jonah knew everybody, and that was something Trina hated. They couldn’t go anywhere without people treating him like he was some sort of celebrity. “Ay, I gotta go politic. Go get settled. I’ll be right back.”

As if on cue, the Rich Gang disappeared into the crowd as the club began to fill up. Trina rolled her eyes and grabbed Yari’s hand before she dragged her to the Gold Room.

“Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay,” DeAndre said tapping the mic, “I just wanted to say a few things before we get started tonight. Welcome to the official launch of Club Lux’s black and gold party hosted by me and the beautiful Tamiyah Lincoln. I don’t even know where her fine-ass is right now. Shout out to Tamiyah though, the face of Lux. The point of tonight is for all ya’ll mothafuckas to have a good time. No drama. No bullshit. Shout out to DJ Echo. He gon’ keep ya’ll rocking all night, and you know I gotta shout out all my Rich Gang niggas. I see you. Turn up.”

br />   The club erupted at the mention of RG, but Trina kept her eyes on Jonah as he navigated his way through the crowd like he was on a campaign trail. At the end of the day, he knew what he did for a living wasn’t the best thing for him to be doing, but it was the only thing, so he made it a point to continually fuck with those who fucked with him. His loyalty was endless. An hour went by, and the club was in full effect. DeAndre had bloggers and the press lined up outside, and Jonah made sure to be involved in all of the photo ops. It was exactly what Dre needed.

On her fourth glass of Ace, Trina couldn’t believe that Jonah was still shaking hands and kissing bitches. Yari, inebriated, swayed to the music oblivious to Omari’s absence. He was usually busy working, so they didn’t spend a lot of time together anyway, but Trina was the complete opposite.

“Bitch, would you sit down somewhere?” she said irritated.

“We’re at the club. What you expect me to be doing?” Yari asked rolling her eyes, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“Nothing, I’m sorry. Jonah just gets on my nerves with all this people pleasing shit.”

  “Ya’ll still fighting?”

“No, I think we’re good now. I just wish that he would show me as much attention as he does these niggas,” Trina said watching Jonah and his clique take shots. He was proud of DeAndre, and he felt like celebrating his accomplishments.

“You are so spoiled,” Yari said laughing, “Jonah isn’t going anywhere. Relax.”

  “I’m trying,” she pouted.

“Here,” she said shoving a shot of 1800 in her hand.

“Bitch, you tryna have me over,” Trina said staring down at the fiery liquid.

“Fuck all that. Turn up,” she said laughing.

Trina took one last look at Jonah and his potnahs bouncing from section to section before she threw the shot back.

“Ooohhh, it burns so good, huh?” she said amused by her friend’s facial expression.

“Let’s go dance,” Trina finally suggested as she grabbed ahold of Yari’s hand. She knew she didn’t have anything to worry about when it came to Jonah leaving her to be with another woman. It was just his undivided attention she was after.

Just as she was getting into her zone, she spotted Jonah across the club again with a short dark-skinned girl draped all over him. She tried her best to not show out in public, but all the drank she had in her system made her feel otherwise. Before she could change her mind, she darted out of the Gold Room leaving Yari standing there alone with a glass still in hand.

“Excuse me. Excuse me,” Trina said as she pushed people left and right deliberately trying to clear a path right to Jonah.

“Bitch,” she heard someone yell through the music behind her, but she kept it moving.

Just as she approached Jonah and the girl, Ron grabbed her from around the waist pulling her off her path.

“Where ya’ll been at all night?”

“In the Gold Room where I thought we’d all be,” she said never taking her eyes off Jonah, “I gotta go do something.” She quickly peeled herself away from Ron’s liquor-soaked breath and stood right in front of him.

“Ay, what’s up, baby?” he asked standing a little less close to the girl.

“I’m Trina, and you are?” she asked focusing all of her attention on his unknown friend.

  “I’m Tamiyah.”

“Oh, okay, you’re Dre’s girl, right?”

“Ummm, I guess you could say that. I mean we’ve been kicking it and what not, but I don’t know if I would say we’re exclusive or anything like that.”

“So is that why you’re all up in my man’s face?”

“Excuse me?” Tamiyah said getting offended, “Listen, I don’t know who the fuck you think you’re talking to. I was just trying to…”

“My bad, Miyah, I got this.”

“Jonah, get your girl. You might wanna rethink that one,” she said rolling her eyes.

“Rethink what, bitch?” Trina yelled before Jonah snatched her by her arm, “So that’s what this was all about?” She snatched her arm back. “You invited me here, so you could chase after these bitches? Basic ones at that. You know DeAndre likes to get these gutta rats and make them feel like a star for the day. Captain Save-a-Hoe ass nigga.”

“Trina, yo, chill the fuck out,” Jonah finally snapped. He could hear the liquor speaking through her, “You always fucking do this. You make it seem like you’re this confident woman, but you act so fucking insecure. I’m in here with my peoples, so I’m sorry if we’re not glued to the fucking hip all night. I’ve loved you since day one because of the strength that I saw in you, but now, I feel like since we’ve been together, you’re getting weak.”

  “Fuck you.”

“I just need to know that if I’m not here that you will be able to take care of yourself.”

“First off, I’ve been on my own for a very long time. I don’t need you to do shit for me. I get the way I do because I love you. I know I go overboard sometimes, but I also know these hoes recognize what I have, and I’m not willing to lose it.”

“You could never lose me,” Jonah said pulling her into him as he kissed her nude lips, “The reason I was even talking to Tamiyah was because I was planning on doing this.”

Suddenly, the lights came on, and the music stopped. Trina looked around, and all eyes were on them.

“Jonah, what’s going on?” she whispered.

“Trina, from the moment I met you, you’ve been the Bonnie to my Clyde. After our first date, I knew that you were the one. I couldn’t think about anyone else, and even a year later, not much has changed. I know we have our ups and downs, but we’re not perfect, and I don’t expect us to be. You’ve been my friend, my rock, my life, and I want to make sure it stays like that forever. Trina Nicole Mitchell, will you marry me?” Jonah asked bending down on one knee. When he opened the black box in his hand, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The gold, antique ring glittered under the club lights.

“Is this the…,” she asked beginning to cry.

“Yeah, I had them change the stones out, but everything else is still the same, so is that a yes?”

Trina looked down at the ring, and her heart melted. It was the exact ring her grandmother used to wear. As a little girl, she always admired it, and she swore when she got married, she would have the same one. On Jonah and Trina’s third date, she saw the ring in a small jewelry store window. It looked like it had been taken right off her grandmother’s hand, but she never expected Jonah to remember.

“Yes, yes, of course,” she screamed. As she leaned down to kiss him, he slid the fifteen carat diamond ring on her finger as tears continued to roll down her cheek.

“The tramp said yes, everybody,” Tamiyah said into the mic as she walked on stage, “Congratulations to my bro and Ms. Attitude…”

“Ay, man, congratulations, King,” DeAndre said snatching the microphone from her small hands, “I already got the bottles popping. Welcome to the fam, sis. Ya’ll give it up for the future Mr. and Mrs. Lee.”

The club erupted despite the sound of lips smacking and eye rolling from all of Jonah’s adoring fans. He had women lined up waiting to take Trina’s place, but most didn’t care whether she was in the picture or not.

“Ay, let’s get back to the party. Congrats to my fellow RG nigga again though. DJ bring that back,” Dre said walking off stage.

SchoolBoy Q’s “Studio” spilled through the speakers. Jonah grabbed his future wife-to-be and stared right into her eyes. At that moment, nothing needed to be said. Their hearts spoke through them. Trina’s insecurities came from feeling like she wasn’t good enough for Jonah. She knew he sold dope for a living, but he was so much more than that. He helped his potnahs create businesses of their own. He never wanted them all on the block. He was okay with the position he had to play because it was a means only to the beginning. He told himself daily that he did more good than bad. He wanted to continue his father’s work but in his own wa
y. Trina didn’t come from much, but Jonah made her feel like she was worth the world. Despite her indiscretions, he was able to see past them. He helped Trina find the woman she really wanted to be. For a year straight, all he did was lace her. Trina knew almost as much about his operations as Jonah did. She made sure to learn about the numbers and logistics of it all. She made it a point to meet his connects just in case he needed her to move on his behalf. Reko hated the arrangement she had with Jonah, but he couldn’t say too much. It wasn’t his place. Jonah appreciated her talents, but sometimes Trina still felt like the girl he met in the strip club as opposed to the woman he helped shape her to be. At that moment, she finally knew in her heart that he was hers, and there was nothing that could come between them. They were going to be bound for life.

Yari ran over to Trina screaming breaking up the embrace. “Oh my gosh, bitch, I can’t believe this. I swear I had no idea. Why didn’t you tell me that you were gonna propose to my girl?” she asked punching Jonah in the arm.

“Yari, you know you can’t hold water, and you got that drank in you too? Oh, no, it would’ve been all bad.”

“Yeah, you probably right,” she laughed, “But congratulations nonetheless. You got a good one. You better take care of her.”
