  ACKNOWLEGMENTS

Some books are lonelier to write than others, and this was one of them. That said, those who contributed their vast expertise include Heather Jarman, Mark Rademaker, Christopher Bennett, Kevin Dilmore, Paul Simpson, and Marco Palmieri. A special note of thanks is due to David Mack for his original creation of the Children of the Storm in his marvelous Mere Mortals. He’ll never know how much pain his semifluid liquid metal hydrogen caused me, but that’s probably for the best.

Emotional support during the writing process came largely from my family: Patricia, Matt, Paul, Katherine, Vivian, Donna, Chris, Fred, Marianne, Freddie, and Ollie Jane, whose strength was of particular inspiration. As always, my agent Maura was magnificent. Lynne continues to make every single part of my life possible and can never receive thanks enough.

But the folks who really kept me sane throughout are the mothers, some of whom have been around for years, and some of whom are newer to my life. They include Samantha, Heather (again), Candy, Lynne (again), Julie, Stacey, Jenn, Tina, Amber, Katie, Analisa, Michi, Yuka, and Elizabeth. As much as this book is for them, it is also for their beautiful children: Katey, Maggie, Jack, Sarah, Allison, Rachel, Abigail, Christiana, Carolina, Connor, Sadie, Finn, Vincent, Nathan, Dash, Desi, Elenita, Addy, Erin, Lukas, and Lyla. There’s good reason why some of those names might sound familiar if you’ve already finished the book.

There are, however, exactly three people without whom this book could never have been created. Jamie Costas hired me to write it and gave me a tremendous amount of freedom to push the story to new depths. My husband, David, kept me fed and loved while again listening to every word. And my unspeakably amazing daughter, Anorah, was kind enough to sleep for enough hours each night during the second six months of her life for me to finish the manuscript. More important, however, the new life she has given David and me brought with it a deep well of emotions and ideas that I never dreamed existed before she was born. She is my bean of joy and I love her more than I can ever say.
