by Alisse Lee Goldenberg

“I know I’m grounded,” Carrie said. “But can Lindsay and Rebecca stay for dinner? I promise we’ll tell you the whole story about where we were.” She lost what dignity she had and gave her mother her best puppy-dog pout she could.

Mrs. Eisen gave an exasperated sigh. “Fine,” she said. “But they are both calling their parents and telling them that they’re home safe and sound. I have been fielding calls for the past two days from the Smiths and the Campbells. They seemed to think I knew where you were. Kindly explain to them what you girls were up to. I can only cover for you for so long. You’re lucky we trust you.” She turned and let them into the house.

“So,” Carrie ventured. “How grounded am I? Two weeks? Three?”

“Try a month,” Mrs. Eisen said. “You are grounded for a month.”

Carrie walked into the familiar confines of her home. “Can we bargain over how long I’m grounded after you hear what we were up to?” she tried.

Mrs. Eisen laughed. “I doubt it. But it had better be a good story.”

Carrie smiled at Lindsay and Rebecca and placed Finnigan down on the floor. He followed her and her friends into the kitchen. It was a good story. Of that, Carrie was certain.

  The Beginning

  Acknowledgements

This book wouldn’t have existed without the hard work of so many people. So, thank you to my amazing editors Rachel, Jill, and Heather, and my fantastic cover artist Don. Thank you Zara and Allan for taking a chance on this series. You can’t know how much that means to me.

But this book belongs to my family. My husband and children, thank you for letting me work hard to create these worlds, and my parents and siblings, thank you for believing in me. However, I have to say that there is one person whose influence and love, whose support and whose stories are the lifeblood of Hadariah. That person is my bubbie. She was my window into the world of folklore. She was the one who first told me of dybbuks and of magic. She told me to never place my bed so that the feet faced the doorway—then the dybbuks would take you in the night. She told me to never whistle in the house, or to place my shoes upon a table. She told me her fairy tales from her home where she’d grown up.

Helen was born in Pilzno, Czechoslovakia, on December 4, 1915. She grew up with her two best friends, Gisa and Lola. All my life, she lived with me, and I considered her my second mother. She told me stories all the time; stories of her childhood and of growing up with her friends and her four brothers. Through her telling me of her childhood, Gisa and Lola and Helen, the original trio, were real and vibrant people to me. Gisa, the dark-haired daughter of the Bobover rabbi, Lola, the blonde and blue-eyed girl who wanted to become a doctor, and my bubbie, who to me had the softest hands and smelled of Nivea cream, were adventurers who sang in a choir and went to school together, just as I did with my own small group of friends. They got into mischief together, and they grew up and fell in love and had families. And that was how I chose to remember them, even as their tale came to its inevitable end throughout the years. This book, this story is the first of my love letters to them.

Thank you, Bubbie, for all you gave me.
