Jacky quickly ran over and ripped the cords off from his forehead. The screen shuddered and went black. McKinnon flopped in his seat. She checked his pulse before glancing back down at the depleted serum bottle.

“He has been injected with a lot of the serum. It’s hard to judge just how long he’ll be asleep. It could be hours, days or weeks even!”

“Okay, just make sure you keep him alive. Have you seen Diesel? I need to talk to him right now.”

Logan and Jacky exchanged panicked looks. “We haven’t seen him in hours but…”

  “What?” I looked between them.

“We noticed in Diesel’s memories he kept looking over these type of blue prints—”

  “You mean for the contacts?”

“Yes… and also no. They were disguised as contacts when in fact they were coordinates.”

“What? No, that can’t be possible.”

“Why do you think no one could mimic his design? We watched the memories. It just didn’t fit. He kept referring to them as his Saviour of Souls.”

The thought clicked. “S.O.S. As in… McKinnon’s nukes? Why would he carry that information around? Does he want to disable them?”

Logan fearfully shook his head. I understood the terror in his eyes, the realization dawning on his face. The same realization hit me too.

  “He wants the formula too.”

“And you believe him? I hope you’re ready for the truth when it is revealed.”

Mixed within them were lists of ingredients. Bombs. Explosives. A virus.

  “Diesel, what—”

“I’m just calling this plan B.”

Panic gripped my throat. “Where is he? I can still stop him! He will listen to me if he knew—”

  “He is gone, Nadia—”

“He won’t leave without me; he has to be here somewhere.” I spun around and searched into the empty office building. I called into the hollow corridors, I checked inside dark, cold rooms. He is probably just sulking somewhere.

I reached the back of the building where a strong draft swung the back door open and shut. I suddenly stopped. The white snap of lightning illuminated the contents of his backpack. The bag, along with all the things he had been collecting for us, even his mobile phone, had been kicked and sprawled across the room. All that was missing were his weapons. He had left everything else behind. Including me.

Diesel… My hands tightened into fists. I took his dumped bag and repacked it with everything he had tossed out. The phone’s screen had been cracked but still turned on. You left it so we can’t track you. I pocketed the phone and returned to Logan and Jacky.

“Well?” They jumped up on my return.

“Do you remember what the S.O.S. coordinates were?” I asked impatiently. Logan nodded. “Can I have them?”

“Of course. Here.” He turned and started writing quickly.

Jacky gripped my shoulder. My head was spinning so fast; it was almost as though she could tell I was about to tip. “Nadia? What are you doing?”

“Something only I can do. Hiro is right. He really is special. Protect him with your life and please be kind to him. He is very important to me.”

Jacky gently nodded and let her grip go. “That boy is incredible unstable.”

I shook my head. “No, I refuse to fear him anymore. Leave Diesel to me, but if something happens please contact me on this number.”

I took out Diesel’s phone and showed her the number.

Jacky took the details down while Logan passed me the paper. I shoved it into the bag with the rest. I hitched the backpack higher onto my shoulders, feeling the weight of Diesel’s shattered hope digging into my spine.

Now I understood why I had always felt out of place. Why I searched for those who didn’t want me back. I hated the feeling; I thought it was a weakness only put there to tear me apart. To cure reincarnation was never meant to be my story. In the end, it was Hiro’s. I was meant for something else.

So maybe, just maybe, I am exactly who I was meant to be.

“So, what are you planning to do?”

I smiled. “I’m going to save the world.”
