by Victoria Janssen

“I have an idea,” she said. “What would you think of going over to Intelligence? Permanently?”

  “With you?”

“With me. I think Major Fournier would be glad to have us. Captain Ashby is with him now, if you remember.”

  “I do. I liked Ashby.”

Hailey slid a little closer. “Ashby knows. About me.”

  “He does?”

“Not sure how, but he figured it out somehow. Never said a word to anyone.”

Southey studied her for a long time. “You really want to do this. Do you think we can both go over? Do you think Captain Meyer will approve it?”

“I think he will. We could do some good, some real good.” She paused. “I want to work with you, not just in sight of you. What we have…could be a lot more.”

Southey relaxed. “I worried what you were thinking. Out here with nothing to do but pop off a bullet every now and again, I couldn’t stop myself from thinking…oh, all sorts of things.”

“Don’t. Do you want to put in for the transfer?”

  “I do.”

His smile at her was as good as a kiss.
