by Mike Shelton

“I will see what I can do to prevent the land from being devastated in a civil war,” Bakari said. “But first, I must return to Mahli with Abylar. I need to find out more about who I am and if there are any more dragon riders. I leave you with Allison Stenos, the newest raised level three wizard, to fight by your side.”

The crowd applauded, and Alli blushed with the attention, but she still couldn’t wipe the silly grin off her lips.

The Chief Judge regarded Alli with delight. “Wizard now, huh? Does that make you more dangerous?”

  Alli laughed. “Me? Dangerous?”

Bakari joined in with them. Laughing felt good. It gave him hope again that maybe things would be better. After giving a hug to Alli and one to the Chief Judge, he climbed back onto Abylar and readied himself.

Bakari waved once again and rose into the air on the back of his incredible blue dragon. He noticed the national flag of Alaris, flying high in Orr. He frowned as he realized Alaris was now committed to civil war. With Kanzar in Cassian, the Chief Judge in Orr, and Roland in the Citadel, the kingdom stood on a reckless course to destruction, unless something could be done. And he, to his chagrin and dismay, might be the key to it all. By virtue of his dragon.

Facing north, he prodded Abylar to fly faster. Under the light of a full moon, they raced over the land of Alaris. From the dry desert to the grassy plains, they flew—back over Cassian, Whalen, and the Citadel—and toward the looming mountains in the north. Spots of snow clung to the tops of their majestic peaks.

Excitement built in his breast as Bakari realized that soon he would see his own people. Hopefully, they would have the answers he needed to help save Alaris and the surrounding kingdoms from pain and destruction.

“To Mahli!” he yelled triumphantly to Abylar.

With a giddiness of his own and a deep intake of breath, the dragon let out a stream of blue fire that swirled around both sides of Bakari as they flew into the Mahli Mountains and over where the barrier had stood for one hundred fifty years.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mike was born in California and has lived in multiple states from the west coast to the east coast. He cannot remember a time when he wasn’t reading a book. At school, home, on vacation, at work at lunch time, and yes even a few pages in the car (at times when he just couldn’t put that great book down). Though he has read all sorts of genres he has always been drawn to fantasy. It is his way of escaping to a simpler time filled with magic, wonders and heroics of young men and women.

Other than reading, Mike has always enjoyed the outdoors. From the beaches in Southern California to the warm waters of North Carolina. From the waterfalls in the Northwest to the Rocky Mountains in Utah. Mike has appreciated the beauty that God provides for us. He also enjoys hiking, discovering nature, playing a little basketball or volleyball, and most recently disc golf. He has a lovely wife who has always supported him, and three beautiful children who have been the center of his life.

Mike began writing stories in elementary school and moved on to larger novels in his early adult years. He has worked in corporate finance for most of his career. That, along with spending time with his wonderful family and obligations at church has made it difficult to find the time to truly dedicate to writing. In the last few years as his children have become older he has returned to doing what he truly enjoys – writing!
