There was a gentle knock at the door. Keltin turned to see the same maidservant again.

“Pardon me, but Mrs. Whitt says that it’s almost time, and that Mr. Moore should take his place.”

“Of course,” said Mrs. Destov. “Come along everyone, let’s go take our seats.”

Keltin quickly removed his new coat as the Destovs filed past him. Elaine paused, placing a hand on his arm and leaning close to him.

“There will be a dance after the ceremony,” she said softly. “I would love it if you asked me to accompany you to it.”

Keltin swallowed. “I’m not much of a dancer.”

“I’ll teach you. Will you say yes?”

Keltin nodded. “Nothing would make me happier.”

Elaine gave him a radiant smile and followed her family to the ballroom. Keltin set aside his new coat and followed the maid, his mind reeling. The Destovs would be in Collinsworth. Elaine would be in Collinsworth. And he had a standing invitation to visit their home. He realized that he was grinning like a fool, and didn’t bother hiding it.

The maid stopped him and indicated where he should stand and wait. After a moment, a door opened, and Mary stepped out. She was beautiful in pure white, her cheeks flushed and her eyes shining. Keltin smiled at her and held out his arm. She took it as he turned and led her into the ballroom to the sound of soft music and a collective sigh of joy from their friends and family.
