Damn I loved this woman. And as I lowered my body on top of hers I couldn’t take my eyes off of her face. I was in love with her, the realization filling me as I filled her with myself. I made love to her, kissing her with a new sense of compassion. My words were taken from me; I couldn’t even speak. I was only thinking of Roxanne and how I was consumed by her in every way. I took my time, stopped at moments to kiss her slowly without moving any other part of myself. I held her tightly, wrapping her in the security of my arms.
I always knew when she was close. My tongue met hers as I moved how she liked it, summoning her to release herself against me. Some of the times when we had sex she would tighten her arms around me, gripping on for dear life. Other times she put her arms above her head. But this time was different. Her arms were loosely around my shoulders when she began to gently quiver beneath me. She was enjoying this more than any other time I had ever seen, so focused on the feeling that she didn’t have time to think about holding on, yet she still didn’t want to let go. There is no greater feeling than a man satisfying his woman, and the sight of her enjoyment gave me no time left before enjoying my own. I trembled against her, still too taken by her to make a sound.
My body lightly quivered as she stroked her fingers along my back. I pushed up onto my forearms and kissed her, lingering on her tasteful lips. When I pulled away I watched her quietly.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, being the first one to break the silence.
“Nothing’s wrong.”
She smoothed her hand down the side of my face. “You don’t seem like yourself.”
I turned my head to the side and kissed her delicate fingers. “It’s because I’m not myself.”
“What do you mean?”
It was time to tell her. “I love you.”
A smiled tugged at the corner of her mouth. “You do?”
“Yeah,” I nodded. “I do.”
She pulled me back against her bare chest. “I love you too, Brad.”
I was relieved to hear her return the sentiment. I nestled my nose in the side of her hair and drew in a deep breath. “I mean, I’m in love with you.”
“I know what you meant.” I could hear the smile in her voice.
“It scares me,” I admitted.
“I know.”
I propped myself back up on my arms so I could see her face. “How do you know that?”
“Because I know you. I’m good at reading people, remember?”
“Yeah, I know you are,” I smiled, intrigued by her perceptiveness. “You’re even better at it than I am.”
“I highly doubt that.”
My smile softened. “I’ve never felt this way about another woman before, I want you to know that.”
“And that’s why it scares you,” she stated.
“Yeah.”
“That’s understandable.”
“Why did you make me fall for you so fast, huh?”
She ran her hand over my hair. “Because I’m good.”
“You are,” I smiled. “In more ways than one.” I put my arm under the arch of her back and moved next to her side, pulling her body over on top of mine. “There. That’s much better.”
“You’ve always liked me on top . . .”
“What man wouldn’t?”
She laid her head on my chest and watched the glowing screen of the TV. I had found in Roxanne my compliment, my equal, and she was everything I had ever wanted.

The number one rule I followed as a successful lawyer was to not let anyone think for one second that I doubted the strength of my case. I did that a lot with Roxy, making it appear that I was completely confident that my case was air tight. But in reality, I knew it wasn’t. My client was a gold digger and a liar, and proving otherwise was going to be a challenge for me. Roxy told me about Claire’s faked pregnancy, and after telling her to never share information like that again in her professional career, I had time to prepare since I knew she was going to bring it up in court. The only option I had to retaliate was to cast doubt against Steve’s character, which was something I didn’t necessarily want to do. I knew Steve was the good person in the relationship, and he didn’t deserve to be painted in a negative light. But doing things like that just came with the territory; it was a part of the job.
When the day came for us to go up against each other I was both excited and nervous. My excitement was from knowing I would see Roxy in action. My nervousness was from knowing my case wasn’t as solid as I wanted it to be.
When it was time for Roxy to question Claire I watched her with admiration. She did well, and I was proud of her for being such a badass in the courtroom. I objected her statements and she objected mine, but all in all it was a fair fight. We each came out with something for our clients, so we both technically won. But I was the one who really won, because I got to witness the look on Roxy’s face when she celebrated her victory of following through on her promise to get Steve his mom’s house in Maui.
Claire pouted in the chair next to me. I leaned into her ear and told her that it was a victory that she got the five thousand dollars per month, when she could have gotten the three thousand that Roxy had offered at our last meeting. What I said wasn’t even that big of a deal but it lifted her spirits and brought her to nod happily at me. It must have been my cologne.
I watched Roxy as she smiled at the judge and took the file on the table into her hand. She looked so poised and satisfied with herself as she walked confidently down the aisle, her feminine hips swaying from side to side, the same hips I held onto when I made love to her. And then she pushed through the double doors and looked over her shoulder at me, catching me in my complete admiration of the woman that she was. Her eyes crinkled with her smile as the doors fell back into place, closing us off from each other and closing our first case together.
I had conquered every case I had ever went up against. And as seasoned of a lawyer that I was, the hardest thing I ever had to do was prove to Roxy that I was the right man for her. There were times I had to plead my case to her, show her the evidence that I was the one who would take care of her in every way for the rest of her life. In the end I won her over, and she loved me for the man that I was. And I’m glad I went after what I wanted, because she was the perfect woman for me. Everything in my life was better because she was by my side. The sun was warmer, the air was cleaner, and the stars were brighter at night. She was my peer, my companion, my lover. She was one hell of a lawyer. But above all she was my best friend.
And I could honestly say without argument that she was the best case that I had ever won.
