Journey to Happiness Page 14

She only whispered the last words but Hugh still heard them.

His hand tightened on hers. Then he said very quietly,

“I can only thank God that by some miracle He has brought us together again.”

“I thought you would forget me,” Martina breathed.

“I could never forget you,” Hugh told her. “I believe we were meant for each other from the moment we were born.

“I adore you, Martina, and I worship you. If you are mine, I am the happiest man on earth.”

  He spoke very quietly.

  Then he kissed her.

For a moment as their lips met, there was only softness and gentleness.

As if Hugh wanted to make her his completely and absolutely, he put his arms round her and kissed her until she felt as if she had become part of him.

‘I love you! I love you,’ she wanted to say, but it was impossible to speak.

She felt as he continued kissing her, as if he was carrying her up into Heaven.

When she could finally speak again she told him,

“I will make up for all the time you have lost. I love you! I love you, as I have never loved anyone in my entire life.”

“And you must go on loving me,” Hugh urged. “I have lived without you for what seems an eternity and once you are mine, I will never never lose you.”

“I feel no one could be as happy as I am at this very moment,” Martina whispered.

Hugh tried to put his feelings into words, but no words were deep enough. So he kissed her yet again until they were both breathless.

“I adore you,” he murmured as she fell back against the pillows. “Now I am going to leave you but I will dream about you all night and soon we will be married.”

“I love you with all my heart and all my soul,” she declared. “I think together we will find a Heaven of our own which will be ours until we leave this earth inseparable for Heaven itself.”

There was nothing more Hugh could say.

He only smiled at her, the smile of a totally happy and complete man and she knew that she possessed his heart and his soul for eternity.

It was as if the stars and the moon were telling them how happy they were and how they must never lose their love for each other as such love comes only from God and the Divine
