Between Brothers: The Sacred Brotherhood Book IV Page 26

I’d checked out just fine according to Doc, my momentary lapse in judgment while in the throes of grief firmly in the rearview, we’d dispensed with the condoms. She was already pregnant and skin on skin felt so much better anyways.

Plus, when Hayley reached eight days past her due date, her doc had suggested sex as an option to speed things along. Said something about sperm might get things going. Considering how miserable Hayley was, just ready to have this baby out, we’d gone for it and wouldn’t you know? Her water had broken this morning…

I held her hand while she went through another contraction, the way her nurse had shown me and I figured this boy had to be Cell’s because it was eighteen hours and counting and he wasn’t going to make an appearance until he was damn good and ready.

  “Oh, god, Blue!”

“I know, baby, but you’re doing so good! You just hang in there okay? You’ve got this.”

She screamed and the doctor checked her out and fuckin’ finally declared, “Okay, Hayley, it’s definitely time to push!”

The shriek my wife let out was fucking soul-rending to the point I seriously contemplated making this an only child, even if that meant I got myself snipped because holy god… I knew making a life was painful and messy, but this shit was unreal.

She moaned and groaned and tried again and after what felt like an age, the doctor lifted a blue baby boy up and passed him immediately to a nurse.

I panicked on the inside. I mean was he supposed to be blue like that? Why wasn’t he crying? What was wrong and then..?

The sweetest sound that I ever heard split the air. I never knew that a newborn baby sounded like a kitten, but it did. My baby boy did.

Hayley sobbed and I held her, pressing a kiss to her sweaty forehead as the doctor worked between my wife’s thighs and the nurse brought our son over. She laid him on Hayley’s chest and we exchanged a look, both of us wearing twin expressions of relief at the shock of bright red, wispy hair on his scalp.

“Hi, Damon…” Hayley murmured and kissed our boy while I had to stand up, overcome with a flood of emotion that poured out my eyes whether I wanted it to or not.

“Oh my god, you did good little one,” I said and reached out to caress our baby’s head.

“I’m so happy…” she declared and I looked at her, my vision swimming and said, “Me, too.”
