Tell Jackie and Pegs I say hello. I’m just not going to be able to make drinks tonight with them. I promise not to cancel on you again. I promise. I’m so sorry. I realize this is hard for you. Now’s just not the time to broach the subject with Rose. She’s too stressed out.

The Band
I’m about to book the band. I know the general vicinity of where we’re getting married, but I have no clue as to the venue since you still haven’t looked at the wedding folder (and, yes, most of the places I initially wanted have already been booked up so it’s slim pickings now). I’m about to give this band a $1,000 deposit of my own money which is fine since they’re in the general vicinity of wherever the hell we’re getting married (once you decide). Anyway, I’m just trying to keep you posted on this stuff … It’d be nice if you had time to get involved in it. It IS our wedding.

Couples Massage
Listen, I know I promised not to cancel on you again this week, but I just won’t make it out in time today to go to the couples massage you got for us. Can you reschedule for next week? Or, maybe next month? Let’s do next month, and I promise it’ll calm down. Or, you could take Elizabeth in my place for the couples massage. I’d be OK about that.
Love,
Peter
P.S. Excited that we decided on the venue this week.

Rose,
I don’t quite know how to broach this subject with you. I understand that we are really busy right now. I also understand how important this case is to you and the firm. This case is important to me as well. I’d rather have this conversation in person, but you are hard to talk to. The truth of the matter is I’m having a hard time managing my personal life with the amount of work entailed for this job. I was wondering if you had any advice for me on how to handle this. I haven’t really seen my fiancée in over two months, even though we live together.
When you told me today I couldn’t go on my vacation that has been scheduled for a while now, I honestly didn’t know how to handle it. I know I agreed with you that my staying here was the right thing to do, but my fiancée and I have really been looking forward to this for so long. We haven’t had a vacation together yet. Is there any way to reach a compromise on this issue? Maybe if I go on the vacation and work the whole time? I don’t know what to do. This is not the job I imagined for myself.
Best,
Peter

Izzy,
I don’t know how to tell you this, but Rose says our case can’t afford for me to take a week off to go to the Bahamas. I’m so sorry, Izzy. I know that saying sorry isn’t going to fix this, and I know that I have to change things, but I just don’t know how right now. I’m sorry. I’m really, really sorry.
We’ll talk tonight. I promise that we will take a weekend off the moment this hearing is done in December and head someplace fun, maybe Savannah or New Orleans.
I will make this all up to you and then some.
I love you so much.

You B—h
This e-mail was written but not sent and will save as Draft until further action.
Dear Rose,
Allow me to introduce myself to you. I am an attorney in the Litigation group here at the firm. More important, I am also Peter’s fiancée. We got engaged in June. I wanted to write to tell you that I hate you more than anything—more than even the possibility of a tragic early death by Chinese water torture— because you are singlehandedly destroying my relationship with Peter by working him like a slave day in and day out. Do you have any idea what you are doing to the people who work for you? I have not seen my fiancé, whom I love more than the world, in nearly three months. He works every day, twelve hours a day, and he works seven-plus hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
So you know exactly what I am saying, allow me to paint a picture of an assortment of the commitments we have had to cancel because of you:
1) double dates
with friends who are couples
2) a Shakespeare play at The Tavern
3) five movies we both very much wanted to see
4) candlelit dinners out
5) walks in the park with my dog, Thea
6) the Coldplay concert
7) a trip to Charlotte to see my best friends
8) happy hour cocktails at our favorite bar with a gay couple whom we adore
9) a couples massage at the spa around the corner
10) last of all, our nonrefundable vacation to the Bahamas which we have been looking forward to for two months now (and our only planned vacation for this year, might I add, until our honeymoon which we may/may not even get to go on depending on you and your schedule)
The above is merely a Top 10 List (because I like lists) of the things Peter and I had to cancel due to your demands for a hearing that isn’t until fucking December.
Oh, and speaking of fucking, yes, that has all been but obliterated from our lives as well, because Peter is too tired every night when he gets home to partake in such intimate activities. As for “sex during the afternoon,” he’s always at the office working for you.
I hate you for all of the above. And, most of all, I hate you for making me wonder if I am marrying … the right man.
