Damen's story is so touching especially with the way he narrates it. I can feel his pain and frustration. How I wish that half of the people of LA, who are already crucifying him based on what the media carried, can listen to all he said to me.
“The case will be given its final ruling in two weeks. At least after that I'll stand a chance to clear my name.”
I don't know what to say. I'm speechless and feeling guilty that at some point I, too, actually doubted his genuineness.
“I'd love to hear about your family and at least meet them,” he asks with all seriousness.
“I'm from Kansas City, Missouri and that's where my family is staying. Well, my dad left us so I wouldn't want to talk a lot about that part. Just like I told you before, I left them there just to get a better life here in California. Life wasn't really rosy back then and it's even worse now due to the condition of my little brother James, who was involved in an accident. For some time now he has been in a coma since there is no money to take him to a hospital with equipment that can treat his condition. The doctor told my family that his treatment would require a lot of money. Since we couldn't afford it, we've been watching him struggle to survive on his own.”
Realizing how telling him this is affecting me, Damen stops me halfway. I’m already sobbing. Well, I’ve really had enough crying for the day.
Allowing me to calm down from my anxiety first, he asks, “What if we decide to take care of your brother’s medical bills from your salary and proceeds your music generates for us? Trust me, you'll still have enough left over while saving your brother.”
I am completely dumbfounded. I don't know whether to cry, smile or scream.
While still battling the right emotion to unleash, Damen misunderstands my reaction and adds, “I'm sorry that I'm suggesting this. I would love to help from my own money, but I realized that you prefer being in charge. Anyways, just make sure you start planning to visit your family. We'll be going there once you are ready.”
“I'm ready,” I shouted immediately as he finished talking. Well, I don't even know when I said that, but I've really missed my family so much. The best part of it all is that I won't be seeing them the same way I left. I came to Los Angeles to chase my dream, but I'm going back to show them evidence that I am now living the dream I never thought was possible. I don't know exactly how they'd react seeing me after not reaching out to them for a while. But then, their reaction doesn't matter as much as the fact that my dream was going to give my brother a second chance to live.
