Mr. Right Goes Wrong Page 34

by Pamela Morsi

“It’s been a long time and a lot of payments,” he said.

“Making things right isn’t supposed to be easy.”

Eli nodded. “So, what should we do with this?” he asked. “Do you want to crumple it into a spitwad and shoot it into the trash?”

She was looking down at the paperwork. “You know, I’m thinking I might frame this and hang it on the wall.”

  “You’re kidding.”

“Nope. I’m thinking it might be good for my clients. Good to know that no matter how deep you get into trouble, you can change. You can turn the situation around. It doesn’t have to define who you are. What do you think?”

“I think you are amazing,” he said.

“Oh, well, you’re in love with me, so that probably doesn’t count,” she said. “Now that I’m no longer a criminal on probation, how should I define myself?”

Eli was thoughtful. “Well, you are a small-business woman.”

  “Yes, I am that.”

“And you’re the mom of two great boys, a college student and a preschooler.”

Mazy laughed. “Not particularly good planning on my part.”

Eli shrugged. “It takes two to make that kind of mistake,” he pointed out. “You are a valued member of the Brandt Mountain community, a regular churchgoer, unbeatable domino player and you are the love of my life.”

“Hmm, I like all of those things, especially the last one.”

“But you know, there is one thing that you are not.”

  “Which is?”

“You are not Mrs. Eli Latham,” he pointed out. “What do you think, Mazy? After all this time and all we’ve been through, have we proven to each other that we are the people we hoped we would be? Do you think that being my wife is something you might take a chance on?”

She hesitated, more for effect than consideration.

  “I do,” she answered.
