I glance behind me at the Ford Explorer parked outside the cemetery.
Jia is standing outside, leaning against the car, watching us, her hair billowing in the wind.
Pine-infused air fills my lungs as I return my gaze to the gravestone. “When I kiss our daughter, I send a kiss up to you. Each time I look into her eyes, I see you. Each time I hold her in my arms, I hug you. You have shown me how to love and how to live. And wherever you are, I want you to know that I will never forget you. If you see Audrey, thank her for lending you her heart so you could spend a little time with me.”
After a few more minutes watching the stone, Alice starts to squirm too much on my lap, so we leave. We find Jia waiting at the metal gate. A bittersweet smile on her lips, she plants a kiss on my cheek, then gets behind my wheelchair to push both Alice and me to the van. Soon after, we drive off into a future I hope is filled with more laughter than tears.
