Archie twirled the end of his mustache. “And who is this woman?”
“Miss Evelynn Tanner. She’s Agent Broderick Tanner’s cousin.”
A man’s heavy footsteps entered the room, but before Graham could turn to see who had come inside, a large hand grasped Graham’s shoulder. He swung his focus around and met Broderick’s narrowed gaze.
“Tanner? What are you doing—”
“You are in love with Evie?”
Graham squared his shoulders. “Yes.”
Slowly, the other agent grinned. “Then I give you permission to marry my cousin.”
Graham rolled his eyes. “That’s wonderful, but I need to talk to her first. Will you tell me where I can find her?”
Broderick’s grin stretched wider. “She’s standing right beside you.”
Graham gasped and swung to face the bride just as she lifted the veil and showed him the beautiful face that had been haunting his dreams since they’d first met.
“Evelynn?” Graham shook his head in disbelief.
“Hello, my darling man.” She caressed his cheek.
“But what are you... how... when...”
“Shh...” She placed her finger on his lips. “You’re mumbling, which is very ill-mannered, especially when we’re about to get married.” She smiled. “Now, are you going to marry me or not?”
Happiness burst inside of him and he laughed. He picked her up and swung her around once. She wrapped her arms around his neck. Her beautiful grayish-blue eyes twinkled like diamonds.
“Oh, Evelynn. I love you so much.”
“And I love you, Graham Morgan.”
He wanted to kiss her so badly, but with everyone in the room, he hesitated. “Do you really want to marry me?”
“Desperately,” she sighed.
“You do know,” he continued, “that you’re about to be made a Pinkerton Agent, right?”
“That’s just an added bonus. I told Mr. Gordon that I would only become an agent if you were my partner. I won’t marry someone I don’t love.”
His melting heart didn’t care if others were in the room this time, and he cupped her face and pressed his mouth against hers. Sighing, she fell against him, returning his kiss.
The exploding fireworks in his ears blocked out any other noise while he kissed Evelynn. His heartbeat tripped frantically in excitement. Never had he been happier. Never had he been more in love. And never had he wanted anything more than to be this amazing woman’s husband.
Suddenly, someone tapped him on the shoulder and he heard Broderick clearing his throat loudly.
“Uh, Morgan?” Broderick said. “There’s plenty of time for that later. It’s time to get you two married.”
Graham and Evelynn broke the kiss, laughing. He hooked her hand around his arm and turned them to face Mr. Gordon. “We’re ready now.”
From the corner of his eyes, he noticed Marianne and Cecily standing in the corner, grasping each other’s hands tightly as their wide grins brightened their faces. Broderick moved next to Cecily and slipped his arm around her waist.
“Now... As I was saying,” Archie said. “We are gathered here today to unite this man and woman in holy matrimony.” His gaze locked on Evelynn’s. “Evelynn Tanner, will you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, ‘til death do you part?”
“I will, with all my heart.”
Her mesmerizing eyes had hypnotized Graham, and he couldn’t look anywhere else. He loved the sound of her voice. It had always soothed him, even when they had teased each other.
Graham would never grow tired of looking at her. She was the prettiest woman he’d ever seen, and every time he looked at her, she grew lovelier.
Broderick cleared his voice again, startling Graham out of his thoughts.
“Morgan,” the other agent said, “that’s your cue to say I will.”
Embarrassment filled Graham, and he chuckled lightly. His face was hot from the blunder. “I will... with all of my heart.”
“By the authority invested in me by the state of Colorado,” Archie continued, “I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
Graham pulled Evelynn back into his embraced and covered her mouth with his before Archie had the chance to say, “You may now kiss the bride.”
Newfound energy flowed through Graham, faster and more enthusiastic than he’d ever felt before. Today, he and Evelynn would start their new lives together as husband and wife. But even better... as partners in this wonderful detective agency.
What could be better than working alongside one’s best friend and lover, anyway? Without a doubt, marrying Evelynn was the best choice he’d ever made.
