I check the basket she set down, relieved when I notice it’s empty, but I smile to myself in self-reproach.
Of course, it’s empty.
Kwame wouldn’t let her carry a heavy basket, especially not with her belly spoiling her balance.
We’re both several weeks from our third trimester, but she’s carrying twins. While my bellybutton began preceding me everywhere only a week or two ago, hers already looks overburdened, yet the smile on her face rivals my own.
We’re all on pins and needles, hoping for the best but terrified of the worst. Any sign she isn’t feeling well, and we all smother her in our own ways.
I have no doubt the couple will excel at parenthood. Kwame glows with pride and watches Britani with such attentiveness my heart throbs. Each time Britani looks toward Kwame, her wild side flares in jubilant reverence before settling into contentment.
The wind shifts, bringing with it a myriad of scents which pull my attention to the two couples cresting the hill behind us.
Unable to twist comfortably, I stand, using the bench and my lifemate for balance, before turning to face Evie and Vander.
Jumoke’s hand on my shoulder shakes as he busts out laughing, his soul overcome with giddy joy.
“I told you! Hell, this is going to be so much fun, watching you get f-“
I elbow him in the ribs and glare at him.
“Are you indicating I’m fat?”
His eyes widen and he shakes his head with such vigor I can’t stop the huff of laughter from leaving my chest.
As the orchard’s other occupants catch Evie’s altered pheromones, they gather closer.
In the blink of an eye, my mirth flips to overwhelming happiness and causes my voice to emerge sounding raw.
“Congratulations. I’m eager to nurture your child, much as you have ours.”
Evie’s violet eyes swim with tears. She doesn’t try to hide them but weaves her elbow through Vander’s as though she needs his support.
After a round of congratulations, Evie smirks and replies.
“Thanks, blokes. There’s no one we’d rather be on this journey with. What do you say about two deliveries at the same time?”
When she jerks her chin over her shoulder at the purple hue traipsing down the hill, cheers bounce off the trees.
Minette and Draukir made it through their heat.
With a baby in tow.
In nine months, we’ll have an alien baby in our midst.
Their race, gender, and color won’t matter. They belong with us, growing and learning alongside our troop of future heartbreakers.
When Jumoke first freed me from hell, I held no hope for the future. I thought I’d never find a place to belong, much less have a family.
We have so much more.
Surrounded by people who’ve gone through horrible trials and done unspeakable things, I feel loved and protected.
Woven within these misfits, I’m home.
I stand and soak in the marvelous atmosphere, imprinting the moment into my memory files to take out and enjoy over and over, whenever I please.
With my fierce Omega sisters by my side and our devoted Alpha brothers watching over us, we’ll bring the next generation to adulthood with love, joy, and patience.
It doesn’t matter what it took to get us here. It was worth it.
We found heaven.
