There We'll Be (Together #3)

She pulled at the white dress she wore to Grandma’s today and scratched her tangled hair. Keeping her hair brushed was like pulling teeth. Things had become different when Grandma found out I was pregnant. It didn’t happen overnight and there were plenty of fights, but eventually we were able to move forward. “Is that before my birthday?”

“No, you’ll have your birthday party before then.”

“And that’s a long time, right?”

I bit my cheek to keep from laughing. “Yes, baby. Are you hungry? I fixed you some mac-n-cheese.”

She threw her hands in the air and raced toward the living room. “Yes!”

I laughed beneath my breath and shook my head. Her small feet slapped against the hardwood and echoed against our noisy house. And I loved it. There was no silence here, and there never would be. Between weekly visits from Jace and Sam, who were engaged, and Grandma, the house was always full of life. And that’s how we like it.

A low wolf whistle came from behind me. I turned and stared up at Boone. He looked devilishly handsome drenched in sweat, his tanned skin pulled tight over lean muscles that drove me crazy. “You know I love that dress on you.”

I did know that. I’d worn it on purpose. These pregnancy hormones had me ready all the time. “Do you?” I asked, twirling around so that the sundress fluttered outward. “I had no idea.”

His smile curled upward, and he stepped forward, hovering over me. I loved how small he made me feel, even with a growing baby bump. “You feeling frisky, Raven?”

I batted my eyes and pulled the hem of my dress halfway up my body.

  “Momma!”

I jerked my dress down and turned to see Paisley pulling her dress over her head. “You’re silly,” she called out.

Boone laughed, leaned down, and picked her up. She tossed her arms above her head. “Superman. Do it, Daddy. Superman!”

He lifted her above his head. “Superman needs to eat. How about you watch some SpongeBob while you’re at it?”

“Yes!” She held one arm out and made a serious face. “To the Batmobile.”

“I thought you were Superman,” Boone asked down the hallway.

“It’s make-believe, Dad. I can have anything when I’m making it up.”

“Oh, okay. Silly me,” Boone chuckled.

I listened to their conversation until I heard the sound of SpongeBob’s voice over the TV. Shortly after, Boone walked into the laundry room that we’d stood in by the back door and locked the door behind him. “Where were we?” he rasped.

“Thank you for takin’ care of her,” I whispered, sliding my hands up his taut chest. “She loves you.”

“She loves you, too,” he whispered. “You’re way better at this parenting thing than you thought, huh?” He glanced down and rubbed his hand over my belly. “Six more months and little Diesel will be with us.”

I closed my eyes and sighed as his fingers caught the hem of my dress, and he pulled it over my head again. But this time there wasn’t any interruptions. “I used to dream about this at night,” he said.

“Dream about what?” I mumbled, too busy concentrating on that way his lips moved against my neck.

“About you being pregnant and barefoot. Kids runnin’ around our feet.”

I smiled. “You would say ‘There we’ll be,’” I whispered.

Boone pushed the fabric of my panties aside and dipped a rough finger into me. “And now here we are,” he whispered. “Just like we always wanted.”

I let my head fall backward, and rolled my hips to meet the rhythm he provided. “Forever.”

His groan sent chills down my back. “Forever, Raven.”

“Mommy! I’m done eating. There is a boy outside and I’m going to go play with him.”

Boone groaned, and dropped his head against my shoulder, before biting the skin. “We’re goin’ to finish this tonight.”

  “Is that okay?” Paisley yelled.

“No,” Boone said. “Hold on,” he yelled, giving me the death glare. “My own personal cock blocker. What in the hell have we created?”

I burst out laughing and let Boone help me get my dress on. We exited the laundry room to find Paisley giving Duke a treat. “Can I go? Please? Duke’ll go with me?”

  “What boy?” I asked.

“He lives through the woods. I think.”

Boone narrowed his eyes, and I followed him to the front door. A boy about four or five was barefoot in our front yard, performing karate kicks. “Who in the hell is this kid?” Boone whispered.

I shrugged my shoulders and opened the front door. “Hi.”

His big brown eyes widened and he straightened. “Can Paisley come out to play? We’ll stay in the front yard. I kind of wanted to jump on the trampoline.”

  “What’s your name, sweetie?”

“Daniele,” he said, eyeing the trampoline.

“Where do you live?’ I asked.

“Just through the woods over there.” He pointed toward the opposite direction of the Sawyer’s land. “We moved in last week. My mom said—”

  “Daniele!” someone yelled.

I glanced over to see a woman around my age racing toward us. The worried look on her face told me she was Daniele’s mom.

He groaned and palmed his forehead. “Mom, I told you I was comin’ to play with my new friend Paisley.”

“And I told you to keep your butt in the yard, didn’t I?” She narrowed her eyes and stopped at the porch steps. “I’m so sorry about him. Is he bothering you? I was so worried.”

I waved her off. “Don’t worry about it. I’m Josie, and this is Boone. Daniele is welcome to play over here. Boone can drop him off at home afterward, if you want. I think he’s eyeing that trampoline over there.”

She barked out a laugh. “He’s been wanting one.” She bit her lower lip and dragged a hand through her frizzled brown hair. “I guess that’d be okay. You sure you don’t mind?”

  “Not at all.”

“Okay, well you behave, and no roughhousing.”

He hid his face but managed to roll his eyes. “Okay, Mom. Bye.”

She sighed, and shook her head. “Don’t have boys. Don’t ever have boys,” she repeated before leaving.

Boone reached over and grabbed Paisley’s hand. “Go play, Sweetie. Come get us if you get thirsty or hungry. You too, Daniele.” But he was already bouncing away on the trampoline.

“I bet you can’t do this!” Paisley yelled jumping up and landing on her back.

  “Can too!”

Boone’s arm snaked around my waist and he rested his chin on my shoulder. “I guess we’re goin’ to get punished with this.”

I giggled. “What do you mean?”

“All the things we snuck out of the house to do.” His eyes flickered toward the kids. “I’ll kill that boy if he lays a hand on her.”

Smiling, I leaned my head back against his shoulder. “We have years before they start thinking about that.”

“And years to plan the perfect murder,” he whispered.

I laughed and placed my hand on my belly. “There we’ll be … pulling our hair out, trying to prevent the inevitable.”

Boone’s lips skimmed my neck. “You know what else is inevitable?”

I groaned as his teeth nibbled my skin. “What?”

  “Our forever.”
