“We also need to figure out how to shake off Cara, because whatever organization she’s working for has got the wrong end of the stick. She’s after Felix now.”
“What?”
“Yep. He sensed he was being followed last time he was in Vegas. He got friendly with security in his regular hotel and they let him have the casino security camera footage. He then showed it to me. It was her all right.”
“You didn’t tell me this.”
“You were studying for exams. Didn’t want to distract you.”
“She never gives up, does she?”
“If it’s not her, it’ll be someone else. Forces will always be against people holding large sums of money. If it’s not taxes, it’s government, or big banks, or hackers. Take your pick.”
“Which is she?”
He shrugs. “No idea.”
“Well, whatever she is, she did me a favor; she taught me not to be blinded by ego.”
“She did me a favor too,” Jack says. “She put us together on that island.”
“Mmm, yes,” I say, pressing my lips onto his. “That was a stroke of genius.”

A WEEK LATER, we’re sitting in a pod on the London Eye—the huge carousel wheel that grants a view over London. It’s early, as the guidebook advised, so we hardly had to queue. The sky’s cleared a bit and the panorama is grayish, but fabulous. I thought I might experience vertigo but the wheel cranks around so slowly it’s not a problem. I could happily stay up here all day.
Jack points out all the landmarks which become a blur of vaguely familiar names, Trafalgar, St. Paul’s, Westminster.
“You know your London,” I say, moving my phone camera to his gorgeous face, the best sight of all.
“I do,” he says wistfully. “Been here on two movie shoots and gotta say I love this place. I’m glad we took some days just for us before the meeting; there’s so much I want to show you.”
“Why not move here?”
“Well…” He looks at me curiously, and I put the camera down. “You, of course.”
“Me?”
“Yes. You. Mia, your school—I can’t take you away from that. I want to be where you are. Always.”
It’s on the tip of my tongue to say I’ll go with him, anywhere in the world, but I slap myself mentally for that. I don’t want to abandon my studies again and end up in the same rut as before, relying on other people for my success. But the thought of holding him back from what he wants to do is also dreadful. As a writer, he could work from wherever he wanted.
This is where the age gap rears its ugly head. I’m stuck until I graduate whereas he bought his freedom a long time ago.
“We’ve never talked about the future much, have we?” I say,
He squeezes my hand. “No. But we should.” His eyes meet mine, glowing in earnest. “If it doesn’t feel oppressive to you.”
“I just want to be with you,” I say quickly.
“That’s what I want too, Mia, more than anything. Because I love you.”
A lump swells in my throat; even though he’s been saying it in so many little ways with his words and actions, it’s always amazing to hear the words. He’s not the type to just say them.
“I love you, too.” My fingers grip his even tighter. In silent togetherness, we watch the sun reappear from behind a cloud to gild the edges of buildings and bridges and to cast a sparkle on the surly Thames. It’s a moment that crowns what we’ve been happily doing for the best part of a year. Committing. We’re already on the road to forever.
