Morgan just shook her head. “Shawna,” she said. “I don’t know about that. I mean, it sounds nice but think about it, girl. She got back with her dude after she found him fucking with her sister. That is some foul shit if you ask me, and I just don’t know if I could ever forgive a dude for doing something like that.”

“Well, now you dating Mister Professional,” Shawna said, giggling. “You might not ever have that problem.”

Morgan shrugged her shoulders. “Don’t say that,” she said then rolled her eyes. “You know how niggas be. Any kind can slip out and cheat on you. That is just how it is. But, you? You in a different situation with everything that happened with Tron.”

Morgan immediately thought back to that night. She had never seen her sister in such a state like she did the night she called her saying that she had called Tron and heard him fucking another chick. Morgan made sure that she was there for her sister when she got home that Saturday night after going up to Honeys East and confronting Tron about what she had heard. Morgan was totally shocked, to say the least, when her sister came back and was ten times more pissed than she was when she had left. She had seen Tron’s side chick up at the club. Morgan knew that seeing something like that was going to really do a number to her sister. That was the reason she made sure to be as supportive as she could, while also keeping it real when her sister asked her what she thought of certain things.

“So, now you thinking about getting back with him?” Morgan asked, wanting to know why Shawna had just told her the story about her client from last night. “I mean, is that what you tellin’ me?”

“Girl, that is not what I’m saying, Morgan,” Shawna answered, shaking her head. “I was just telling you what Miss Susan was telling me last night at the shop. Girl, I was so shocked…just as shocked as you are right now.”

“I mean, yeah,” Morgan said. “That is some deep shit. And Tron having a side chick is some deep shit, too. How long you think he been messing around with her?”

“Fuck, I don’t know,” Shawna said. “But now I know that is why you saw him out south that day.”

“And he tried to say that he was making a U-turn when I saw him on Thompson Road?” Morgan asked, simply wanting clarification as she was connecting all of the dots in her mind.

  Shawna nodded. “Yeah,” she said.

Morgan shook her head. “Naw,” she said. “I saw the way his car was angled. It sure didn’t look like he had just did no U-turn. It looked to me like that nigga was coming out of them apartments when I just so happened to ride by. So, Shawna, I mean….why don’t you just go on and start going to them events downtown or something and get you a professional guy?”

“Girl, what you mean?” Shawna asked, not understanding what her sister was really talking about. “Tron is professional. I mean, he can be.”

Morgan, who was spread across the floor across from her sister while the TV played, cut her eyes to Shawna. “Shawna, you not serious, is you?” she said. “Yeah, maybe he can act professional and shit, but who really can’t do all that. Let’s look at it factually. Girl, I like Tron and stuff. I really do. He cool and like a brother, in a way, to me. But you know you can go out there and get better any time you want. Tron know that too, and that’s what make him even more stupid for fucking around with some thot and lying dead to your face about it.”

“Girl, I just can’t believe that we saw her up at Clarks,” Shawna said, shaking her head. “When I saw her up at the club, I was confused, shocked, and just all sorts of feelings. It took me a second to place her face, but after a couple of minutes, I knew exactly who she was and then I found out she was up there by the bar waiting on Tron just like I was. That was the icing on the cake for me.”

“I know,” Morgan said. “I remember when you came home that night and told me about that. I remember us going up to the mall and I remember seeing her a little bit. The real shapely chick, right?”

  Shawna grinned. “Yeah,” she answered.

At first, Shawna had been so angry that she felt like she could go up to the mall and embarrass that hoe at work and drag her ass all through the mall. At the same time, just like she’d told Ms. Susan, she knew that she had too much to lose. Furthermore, she prided herself in being the kind of chick that was not going to lower herself by fighting over some man. It hurt and it hurt bad, but there are certain things that she just was not going to do. What made her staying with Morgan even crazier was the fact that Morgan lived not too far from Lafayette Square. Shawna was almost happy that all this snow was out on the road. The snow is what really helped to calm her down and keep her from doing something stupid. In that kind of snow, she didn’t go anywhere unless she really had to go there.

“That is just some foul shit,” Morgan said. “I mean, I really thought Tron was better than that. And for all this to come out in the open right after you throw his birthday party and stuff just make it even worse if you ask me.”

Morgan looked over at Shawna. She could tell that her sister was in her feelings about it all and was very careful of what she was saying to her while the two of them talked. Deep down, she really hoped that her sister would just go ahead and let it all go rather than even consider getting back with Tron. Morgan went back and forth in her mind between how and if she should tell Shawna just how she felt. After dancing around the topic for a little bit, she decided that it would simply be the best thing to do, as her sister, to let her know how she actually felt.

Morgan’s comment rang over and over again in Shawna’s mind. She hadn’t really even thought about how she’d just given Tron a birthday party. Now that she thought about that fact, it definitely made her feel even more betrayed.

“Yeah, you right about that,” Shawna said. “That is messed up. I mean, I really thought we was gon’ get married and stuff. I just took all my clothes and left.”

“Shawna, girl,” Morgan said. “You been saving your money for some months now right…stacking that shit up?”

“I mean, yeah,” Shawna answered. “But still.”

Morgan nodded. “I know he been calling you,” she said, clearly sounding pessimistic in her voice.

“How you know that?” Shawna asked.

“Shawna,” Morgan said, smiling. “I may be your little sister, but I been around too. I ain’t new to the game.”

Shawna snickered. “Girl, stop,” she said. “Don’t even be actin’ like you know the game and all that. And whatever you know about the game, you learned from your big sister.”

“Girl, whatever,” Morgan said, smiling. “So, anyway… I gotta ask you this, Shawna…and I want you to answer me being real.”

“What?” Shawna said, wondering what serious question her younger sister had for her.

“Are you really thinking about getting back with Tron?” Morgan came out and said. “I mean, be real with me…with yourself, Shawna. Have you been thinking about getting back with Tron? It sounds like that story Miss Susan told you really got you to thinking and I just want to know where your head at.”

Shawna was quiet for a moment, looking away and at the ceiling.

“Shawna?” Morgan asked, ready and waiting for an answer from Shawna.

Shawna shrugged and looked back at her sister. “Girl, I don’t know,” Shawna said.

“You really love him that much, do you?” Morgan asked. “I mean, he got you like a train wreck and stuff. And after finding out that he had a side chick for however long, you met her up at his club, and all of that, you would still see yourself as having some sort of feelings for his ass?”

Shawna shook her head. “I mean, Morgan,” she said, trying to find the words. “I just don’t know. I ain’t never been faced with no decision like this.”

“Decision!” Morgan said. “No offense, girl, but it sound like he made the decision for you. I don’t know if I could forgive a dude for that.”

“What you mean?” Shawna asked, liking that she was having a real grown woman conversation with her younger siste
r. Her point of view was interesting and important to Shawna.

“I mean,” Morgan said. “Girl, to me, if you want the truth, I would just be done. Like I said, I know that he done called you and stuff since it all happened.”

“Yeah,” Shawna said, admitting that what Morgan was saying was true. “He did.”

“And what did y’all talk about when he hit you up?” Morgan asked.

“I never answered,” Shawna told her. “He called me quite a few times, especially the days right after that night at the club. He even text me and shit, you know. But I ain’t answered.”

“After a little while, he’ll get the point,” Morgan said. “Shawna, girl, I really do like Tron and stuff, but a side chick like that? I just don’t know if I would be getting back with him if I was you. I mean, who knows how long they been fucking around and stuff? It is just too much to me, if you ask me.”

“Yeah,” Shawna said, nodding her head. She picked up her phone and looked at it, for no particular reason. However, she noticed that Tron had not called today. With each day, he was calling less and less, and now it had come to a point where he hadn’t even called yet.

“You not checking to see if he callin’ you or nothin’ like that, are you?” Morgan asked her sister, noticing how she was looking at her phone.

Shawna just shook her head. “Naw, girl,” she answered, realizing that she was lying about how she was really feeling. “Girl, I was just checking my text messages to see what my clients said to me, if anything. This weather lately is starting to get into my money a little bit with all of this snow we been having.”

Morgan nodded, feeling deep down that Shawna wasn’t keeping it totally real with her. “Hmm, hmm.”

“Girl, I’m being serious,” Shawna said.

Morgan gave Shawna the whatever look. “Shawna, I can see it already,” she came out and said.

  “See what?” Shawna asked.

“You gon’ wind up getting back with that dude,” Morgan said. “And don’t say that I didn’t warn you when you get right back to this same point the next time.”

When Reese heard the front door at Desirae’s apartment shut and everything get quiet, she knew that Tron had left. Moments later, she could hear the thumps of his footsteps as he headed downstairs and out of the building door. She looked out of the window for a second then came out of the back room, moving slowly down the small hallway. Within seconds, she was looking at her girl Desirae. She was slumped into the couch, clearly looking as if she had been through something. Reese wanted to say something so bad, considering that she heard just about everything that was said from the back room. At the same time, though, she just didn’t know how Desirae would react to her hearing all of her business like that.

“Desirae?” Reese said, sounding soft and friendly. “You alright, girl?”

Desirae looked up at Reese then back down. “Girl, I don’t know,” she answered. “I mean, I know that I was being a real woman about my shit. You know, doing the right thing and all, for the sake of my baby. But now that the moment is over, I just don’t know how I feel about it all. Part of me…Part of me just wish that I had kept all this to myself and not even told him. He don’t think the baby is his.”

Reese had heard that part from the back room, as well as just about everything else. She came over to the couch and sat down.

“Yeah,” Reese said, trying to think of what she could say that would be supportive and positive. It was obvious to her that Desirae just needed some real, positive reinforcement on the back of her talk she had just had with Tron. For one second, she tried to imagine herself in Desirae’s shoes. It was a situation that she hoped she would never be in. Seeing the toll it was taking on Desirae, she felt even stronger about it. “Well, he probably just having a hard time dealing with it.”

“Reese, stop,” Desirae said, clearly not being entertained with Reese’s little pep talk. “I know that you could hear everything he was saying to me out here, all the way up to when he left talking about he just didn’t know about all this and saying that he wanted a paternity test.”

“Yeah…” Reese said, feeling a little guilty that Desirae had to feel so exposed like that. “I mean, yeah, I did. And that is some fucked up shit for him to tell you that he don’t think the baby is his.”

“I know,” Desirae said, feeling her strong black woman pride slowly getting softer. Within seconds, a tear was rolling down her check. She wiped it away quickly, hoping that Reese wouldn’t see it.

“So…” Reese said, trying to be as cautious as possible. “You don’t think it’s no other dude’s baby, do you?” she asked.

“Reese, girl!” Desirae yelled. “Hell naw it ain’t no other nigga’s baby. I ain’t been getting’ no dick from no other nigga, so it would have to be Tron’s baby. I swear, for the last four months I only been fucking with Tron. Fucking with him, I didn’t need no other nigga, you know? It has to be his baby.”

Reese nodded, remembering that she had gotten a glimpse of Tron from the bedroom window. She had watched him walk from the apartment building entrance to his car. She couldn’t help but notice the swag in his walk. On top of that, Tron was handsome – tall and lean, but not skinny. Reese had never really messed with a dude like that, but it sure looked to her like he was just the type that Desirae would like.

“Girl, I know how you must be feeling,” Reese said. “So what you gon do about all this? I mean, are you really going to go through with the paternity test thing. Sorry, Desirae, that I heard all your private stuff.”

Desirae nodded. “It’s okay, girl,” she answered. “And I don’t know right now. I just can’t get past how just last week, he was making love to me right in this apartment like no other, coming up to the store, and taking me to get a little dinner. Now? Now, you would think that I’m just some hoe he met at the club and fucked a couple good times. This is just too much.”

“Desirae, girl,” Reese said, leaning over and hugging her. “You know I’m here if you need me and stuff, okay? I mean, I really feel for you and what you goin’ through. This shit is just crazy to me.”

  Chapter 6

When Tron got back to his place, Tyrese was sitting in the living room, chilling. The television blared. Tyrese turn the volume down as soon as he realized Tron was there.

“Wassup?” Tyrese said. “So, how it go?”

Tron walked into the room and plopped down into a chair, shaking his head and taking a deep breath. “Man, I don’t know,” Tron said. “I went over there and talked to her and shit and she was getting all emotional and shit, talking to me about that same old shit.”

“About you breaking it off with Shawna and going to be with her and shit?” Tyrese asked, wanting some clarification.

Tron nodded. “Yeah,” he answered. “That stuff. Man, I ain’t got time to be dealing with her and no fuckin’ baby right now. I really think she did this shit on purpose.”

“You ask her about the birth control?” Tyrese asked.

Tron hyperventilated, nodding his head. “Yeah,” he said. “I asked her about that shit too.”

  “And what she say?”

“Nigga, you already know what he said,” Tron said, sounding kind of irritated about the entire situation. “She said a couple or few months ago or some shit, she slipped and forgot to keep taking that shit.”

“She slipped and forgot to keep taking it?” Tyrese said, shaking his head. “What kind of shit is that? You fuckin’ serious? Dude…she did that shit on purpose just so she could keep you. You already know that is one of the oldest tricks in the book. You remember when Memorille did that shit to Jon back in high school – sophomore year.”

Tron nodded. “Yeah, I remember that shit,” he said. “And far as I know, the two of them ain’t been on good terms or nothing sense.”

“Nope,” Tyrese said. “So, what you gon do about Desirae, nigga? I mean, do you really think it’s your baby?”

  “I mean,” Tron said,
really wishing that he was not playing a leading role in this story. “Yeah, I guess. It could be my baby, there is no doubt about that I don’t guess. It’s just the shit pisses me off and shit because she didn’t tell me. Like we been saying, the more I think about this shit, the more I start to think about how she did that shit on purpose. And get this, you not gon believe what she asked me before I rolled up outta there.”

  “What?” Tyrese asked.

“She asked me if I wanted her to go and have an abortion,” Tron answered.

“Oh, yeah?” Tyrese said. “And are you gon try to get her to go have an abortion? Nigga, how you feel about that shit? Do you think that she would actually go through with it and do it?”

Tron shrugged. “I don’t know,” he said. “All that wasn’t even my idea, dude. That’s the only thing that make me think that maybe – just maybe – she really didn’t do this shit on purpose. Or why else would she be the one to bring up an abortion?”

“Look, man,” Tyrese said, sitting up on the couch. “I don’t know how you feel about that kinda shit or what or if you ever even thought about, but I say you think about if you would be cool with something like that. If she would be cool with that shit too, but maybe it’s something that you should do. You, yourself, said that you don’t want a baby. And it ain’t like the world know that you got a baby on the way, anyway. Ain’t like you done told your mama and shit.”

“Hell naw, nigga,” Tron said. “I would never hear the end of it if I told my mama I got some hoe like that pregnant. Could you imagine the look on my mama’s face when I introduce her to Desirae? She would probably slap the shit out of me on the spot, right there. You know how she get when it comes to fast girls, as she says, and her son. And with all that is going on in my family right now, I just know she would go on and on about that shit, and I would never hear the end of it. Even if we do keep the baby and shit, I still don’t know when I would tell her ass. I definitely gotta work my work up to even thinking about going down to Louisville and doing some shit like that.”
