Margie sat on the cold examination table. She’d been brought to the hospital to be checked over, two armed State Troopers remaining outside the door to the examination room. After getting out of the hotel, she felt like she’d traded one set of prison wall for another.
A doctor walked in and introduced himself. “Good morning, Margie. I’m Doctor John Barrett. How are you feeling today?”
“Better than I should, given all the circumstances I’ve been through,” she said.
“I’ve been asked to give you a thorough exam to make sure you are not seriously injured at all,” he informed her, giving a reassuring smile. “Please remove your gown. I’ll turn around if you want.”
“That’s okay, Doc,” she said as she slid the gown off and sat back down on the table.
“Please look to the left and to the right, slowly,” he said, shining the light from the ophthalmoscope into her left eye, then the right. “And stick out your tongue, please.”
“I’m fine. I told the troopers that on the way here but they wouldn’t believe me.”
“It’s just procedure, Margie,” he said in a low tone as he felt the glands under her jaw. “Have you felt any pain at all?”
“None at all,” she answered.
Doctor Barrett began looking over her arms, legs and torso. He looked at her skin for any punctures or discolorations. He appeared to have noticed the bite wound on her leg and bent down for a closer look.
“How did you get this bite mark, Margie?” he asked.
“I got bit when I was in the woods. But I kicked the guy in the head and got away.” “Does it hurt much?”
She looked down at the wound. “Not really. It’s just a mild irritation.”
“They said you were complaining of a headache and flu-like symptoms when they found you. Are you still feeling them?”
“I don’t feel that way anymore,” she answered. “I feel better than I ever have. I feel more alive than I can ever remember feeling.”
“How so?”
“I feel like every cell in my body is alive. I feel like I can focus my mind better than ever. My body feels so alive that my skin is tingling.”
“Your skin is tingling on your arms?” He asked.
“Everywhere,” she answered. “I can’t even explain it, but something feels so different about me now. I feel like all of my senses are heightened to a point they have never reached before.”
“I don’t know what to make of that, Margie.” He scribbled some more notes. “Would you mind if I keep you here for a few days for observation? Just to make sure nothing further develops.”
“It seems unnecessary, but I guess it beats going to a holding cell right away.”
“I’ll have them get a room ready for you. In the meantime, why don’t you wait right here?”
She nodded her agreement and watched him leave. As closed the door behind him, Margie closed her eyes. Her entire body felt like electricity was flowing through it. She knew this was a sign of things to come. She felt she had a purpose now, and she was determined to find out what it was.
