  "I suppose you're right." Even if he was subject of no true prophecy, that did not change what he and his friends had done. "In the end, we are what we make ourselves.

  "By the way, what were you doing in Arrith, anyway? Were you looking for Helrish?"

  "In part, yes, but not just out of social yearnings. I'd figured out the man I killed in the wasteland wasn't the real sorcerer behind it, after seeing that face on the plant, and headed to Arrith to see if my old acquaintance knew anything about it."

  "And?" Ann asked, eyes bright and eager. "What did you find out?"

  "There is apparently a Vorhen sorcerer still active in Widalia, passing himself off as an important merchant in the northern region. It also seems he had ties with the Duke of Arrith..."

  "So are you going to stop him?"

  "I'd been thinking of it, but now that I've found Mark, I don't know-"

  "What's the problem?" Ann asked with a grin. "I'm sure Mark would be happy to join you, and we can do our bonding on the road. On to the final battle!"

  "That's the third time you've said that in less than as many months," Mark said. "And how would this count as being the 'final battle' when it's not really related to the other ones we've had?"

  "We did fight a creature of his during our journey, and who knows if the one that attacked us on the way home didn't belong to him too? Come on, Mark, what do you say? I think the best place for you to get to know your mom is in her element."

  Kyle grunted. "You are too hungry for excitement, Princess." But he did not really sound that opposed to the idea.

  Mark considered. On one hand he felt rather tired from all the battles and danger he had gone through. On the other, he had well learned that some confrontations just could not be avoided. What would benefit Brianna's relationship with him more, some calm days of social discovery, or an adventure with her son the warrior?

  He patted Ann's shoulder and smiled. "I think... I'll have to think about it."
