“I love you, Liv,” he said again just before he lowered his mouth and kissed her.
She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back.
“I was so afraid,” she said when he lifted his mouth from hers. “I thought you were going to let me go.”
“It would have been the biggest mistake of my life.”
She reached up and kissed him again on the lips, then buried her face in his chest. “I love you, Damien. More today than ever.”
“You’re getting no great bargain, Liv. There are those who will always wonder how you can wake up every morning and bear to look at this face on the pillow next to you.”
She smiled then cupped her palm to his scarred cheek. “Then I will have to tell them how impossible it would be to go to sleep each night without being able to look at your face on the pillow next to me.”
“Do you think they will believe you?” he said, kissing her again.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when I’m in your arms, I behold perfection.”
“Oh, I love you, Liv.”
Damien kissed her again and sighed with relief. He could have lost her. Instead he gave her his heart to cherish for the rest of his life.
And he knew a peace he hadn’t felt for a very long time.
