“Fine,” he sniffed with petulance. “If your career is more important than me.”

“What?” she was indignant. “You want me to attend to your hard on instead of confronting this?”

  “It’s not important.”

“No,” she snapped. “You erection is not important.”

  He pouted. He actually pouted.

“Look,” he said after a moment, stepping back to her and stroking her face. “A solution will present itself.”

  “I hope so,” she sighed.

And then his hands were back inside the blanket, pawing at her tits once more.

“I said no,” she barked with such force that his hands snapped away from her body.

  “Fuck’s sake,” he exhaled.

  “There’s a time and a place.”

“Not what you said earlier on.”

  “This is different.”

“Oh because of what? Med school?”

“What?” she asked, crinkling her brow, genuinely confused by the non-sequiter.

“It’s not gonna happen you know.”

And then she realised he was lashing out because she had spurned his advances.

“You’re gonna be a fucking EMT the rest of your life.”

He said it with such disgust that she found herself laughing at the absurdity of his acting out. And that made him flash red and storm out of the room.

Amy shook her head. She didn’t have the time or the inclination to deal with one of Joseph tantrums right now.

She stood up, letting the blanket fall to the floor, and scooped up some scrubs from a cabinet in the corner. After she’d put them on, she grabbed her wet clothes, tossed them in a plastic bag, and went out to find Jennifer.

She found her just outside the entrance, staring at their parked rig.

Once they were underway, Amy was calm enough to tell her partner what had just happened. Jennifer said the right things, and Amy found herself in a better mood.

“That said,” Jennifer continued. “Can’t believe you turned down a definite fuck.”

  “Whatever.”

Jennifer smiled, letting her know she was trying to amuse.

“I’m horny as hell, and you’re palming them off willy nilly.”

  “Willy nilly?”

  “Yeah, willy nilly.”

Amy parked the rig back at the fire house.

“I need a nap,” Jennifer said, bolting down from the cab. “Don’t disturb me.”

She was out of the apparatus bay and halfway to her quarters before Amy had even unbuckled.

And so she sat there in the cab, alone with her thoughts, a choice to make, staring out of the window into the middle distance. And then her mind focused on what Joseph had said about med school, and she flashed with anger.

It was enough to shake her from her reverie, and she clattered open the door and clambered out of the bus. She wanted to lash out at someone, and the only legitimate target of her ire in the house was Patrick. And so she strode down the corridor towards his quarters and lifted her hand to pound on the door.

  But something stopped her.

She listened for a moment, and then shook her head.

It sounded like he was fucking someone.

Amy wondered which of the regular fireflies had come on by, ready for her fix of hose. She thought it was beneath Patrick, and found herself disappointed that he had succumbed to their facile charms. Some of the younger guys maybe, a candidate for sure, but not Patrick. What did he see in someone who was only attracted to his job?

The grunting was getting louder now, and she walked away with a look of disgust on her face.

All in all, her day was going badly.

She changed into a new uniform, and realised that she was starving. And angry as hell.

So she took it out on the kitchen utensils as she prepared a sandwich. What she built was an epic beast, and she was salivating at the prospect of eating it when the klaxon sounded and called for her rig to head on out.

Amy swore and tossed the food in the bin.

She knew she should go and get Jennifer, but she decided to let her sleep instead. She was exhausted and she needed her rest, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

And so Amy pulled up at the address all by herself. Judging from the houses in the neighbourhood, some of which had recently sold for millions, there was no need for her to feel nervous about answering a call alone.

  Yet she did.

She grabbed her stuff and wandered into the mansion, it huge double height doors open ready for her arrival.

  “Up here,” a woman called.

The sweeping staircase took some time to climb, and Amy was struggling for breath by the time she reached the top. This place was so opulent, she found herself wrinkling her nose at it in disgust. There was no need for someone to be this rich, when most of the country was struggling just to pay the bills. A part of her knew that she had been called out for something frivolous too.

By the time she reached the end of the hall, the woman was calling out for her again.

Acrid smoke hung in the air, wafting near the ceiling in clouds. It smelt like burned paper and fire extinguisher.

“Do I need to call for a truck ma’am?” Amy asked into the air, still searching for the woman.

  “No, the fire’s out.”

Amy stepped into a side room running off from the giant main bedroom. There she saw the woman, sitting in front of a walk-in vault, holding a damp cloth to her wrist.

“I burned myself,” the woman said.

“What’s your name?” Amy asked as she knelt down and started to attend to the wound.

“Victoria,” the woman said with a wince, just as Amy peeled back the cloth to look.

  It was pretty bad.

  “What happened?”

“Came up and saw smoke billowing from the vault. So I grabbed the extinguisher and put it out, managed to burn myself in the process. Looks like the electrics went.”

Amy peeked into the vault, and saw a bank of empty shelves.

“Most of it’s in the bank,” Victoria explained.

Amy shrugged, and applied some cream to the burn. Its instant cooling was obviously welcome.

“Managed to get that out,” Victoria said, gesturing to a box of jewellery at her side. “The bearer bonds are ash though.”

  “Bearer bonds?”

Victoria laughed, obviously finding the notion of someone not knowing about bearer bonds a quaint one.

“Sorry,” she said finally. “I forget sometimes.”

Her tone was so patronising it was all Amy could do to stop from poking at her burn with a vicious finger.

“They’re like ten thousand dollar bills,” Victoria explained with the same tone. “Only untraceable.”

  Amy shrugged.

“Hardly used these days. And they’re all gone. Insurance’ll never believe us. Ah well, such is life. They were but a curio.”

Judging from the original paintings on the wall, that money wouldn’t be missed.

“Can you take me to Cedars-Sinai?” Victoria asked.

  “Suppose.”

It was out of the way, but Amy couldn’t think of a reason not to.

“Great,” Victoria got up and pushed the cloth back onto her wrist. “I’ll just get changed.”

Amy nearly spluttered a swear word, but she was already gone.

And so she packed up her stuff and stood there waiting like a lemon. She got a bit antsy and started to pace, finding herself inside the vault, looking at the ashes on the floor, some pieces of burned paper floating in the air still.

  Something caught her eye.

Amy knelt down and looked under
one shelf, nearly prostrate to see.

There, tucked back, she saw a small pile of large pieces of paper. She pulled the pile out, and saw what must be a stack of those bearer bonds. There were about a dozen, each marked in ten thousand dollar denominations, issued by the State of Nevada. There was enough here to put her through med school.

And Victoria thought they had gone up in smoke.

Amy looked out of the vault, seeing no-one, then back to the bonds.

  It was extremely tempting.
