Picking up the Pieces Page 20

by Louise, Michelle

When she kissed me, it had to be the most intense moment we ever shared. Taking my time to enjoy it, knowing it would be our last; I used all my self-control not to take it further. This was the very spot we had lost our virginity together and turning Sawyer down, after having her back in my arms again was extremely painful, in more than one way. This is not my Sawyer and she would regret it in the morning. I knew she loved me, but she also loved Preston, and would never forgive herself if she hurt him like that.

That’s why I know I have to fix this. Sawyer is too stubborn and more than likely will not make the phone call to Preston tomorrow. I know her too well.

Sitting outside her house in my truck, knowing she kept her phone off, I decided to leave her a voicemail to remind her of the promise she made me. She has never broken a promise and doubt she will be able to start now. Sawyer deserves to know the truth and hear Preston’s side of the story.

To get the ball rolling even more, I decide to pull out the big guns and call Preston myself. It doesn’t ring long before he picks up and I can hear the worry in his voice.

  “Is she ok?” he asks.

“I found her drunk but she is in bed now. Look, man I am sorry for last night. She was upset and I just saw red. I shouldn’t have hit you without knowing the story.”

“No. I deserved it. I hurt her. But damn it, she wasn’t supposed to find out like this. I needed to tell her when I was ready. What am I going to do? I love her.”

Even though I already knew he did, it still hurts to hear him say it. Preston loved Sawyer, the girl I have been in love with since kindergarten.

“Look, I don’t know what is going on, but you need to be honest with her. She can handle a lot, as long as you don’t lie. She promised she was going to call you in the morning, but I don’t really believe her. Do you love her enough to fight for her?”

“Hell Yeah!” Preston says without hesitation. “I would do anything to have her back. I am lost without her and it’s only been a day. I feel like such a pussy about it but I don’t care.”

Sounds about right. She always had that effect on me too. But with Sawyer in your life, you didn’t care how much of a pussy you looked like because it was well worth it.

“Then you need to fight. Calling her isn’t going to cut it. You want to fix this? You need to do it face to face.”

He was silent for a moment. “I have to ask, why are you doing this? I know you still love her.”

“That’s why I am doing this. I love her. Sawyer isn’t a girl you ever stop loving. I fucked up last year and lost her. Before I had the chance to get her back, she found you. I have seen you guys together the past few months, and know you make her happy. That’s all that matters. But I am telling you right now, hurt her again and all bets are off.”

“No, I understand. I never want see her hurt again, but if by some chance it happens, you have my permission to do as much damage as you feel fit.”

I could hear the sincerity in his voice; he would make sure she never hurt again, for any reason.

“Glad we are on the same page. Now listen, you need to get in your car and come fix this. A little word of advice, call Cheyenne, you will need her in your corner. Sawyer won’t make it easy on you, be prepared to work for her forgiveness, but know she’s worth it. She’s yours now, you know. Take care of her.”

  “Always, man. Thank you.”

I hang up the phone, start up my truck, and drive away from the only girl I will ever love. Even though it hurt and with the realization that Sawyer now belonged to another guy, it felt incredible to do something so selfless, ensuring her happiness. I will always love Sawyer and I want nothing but the best for her. While I may have been good for her, it is Preston who is the best. He will be her happy ending.
