Chase Tinker and the HOUSE OF DESTINY Page 24

by Malia Ann Haberman

"I can't believe you forgot something so important!" said Chase angrily. For years his dad had wanted nothing to do with magic. Now to find out he'd finally accepted his lot in life and had wanted to take his place as the next Keeper of the House was more bad news in an already devastating day. "This isn't some game we're all playing. Being Keeper is a colossal responsibility."

"You don't have to tell me," said Ben. "I know what the job entails. It's also something for an adult, not a kid. I was letting my hatred of magic affect my better judgment. I knew you were too young to take over the position."

Chase wanted to tell his dad that maybe a year and a half ago he had been only a kid; he had been too young to be Keeper. Now he no longer felt that way. His life as an ordinary boy had been left far behind, but he knew he'd be wasting his breath to try to explain it.

"Fine!" said Chase, flicking his hand at Benjamin. "Then I'll transfer them to you. Or Nori. She's got what it takes to be a much better Keeper than me. I'll probably screw up all the magic, anyway."

"But it doesn't work that way," Ben said, his voice filled with weariness. "The current Keeper of the House has to die in order to pass the powers to another family member. It looks like you're it."

"Well, you know what? It doesn't matter!" snapped Chase. "Because, right now, I'm the Keeper of exactly nothing!"

Andy jumped to his feet. "I can't believe you guys are fighting over being Keeper and who has those stupid powers right now! Don't you get it? Grandfather's gone and he's not coming back. And there's nothing we can do about it!"

Whirling, he ran up the stairs, Chase and Benjamin watching, unable to respond.
