Caroline made a last-ditch attempt to attend but was turned away at the doors of Westminster Abbey. The King was crowned alone. Afterwards he went on a state visit to Ireland and it was while he was out of the country, on the evening of Monday, August 6, 1821, that his Queen died. The King was said to be jubilant. He did not marry again and died in 1830, to be succeeded by his brother, William IV.
