Giselle didn’t know what to say. She had saved Maura and Thierry? Could it be true? But even if it was, she hadn’t done it alone. Angelica had been there to help her. Giselle threw her arms around the older girl. “Thank you, Angelica,” said Giselle. “For everything.”
Angelica pulled her close for a moment, her arms strong and tingling with energy. “And I thank you,” she whispered. Suddenly, she stiffened and released Giselle. “I am sorry, but I must go. Vivo is calling me!” She stepped away.
“Vivo? Who is Vivo? What’s wrong?” But even as she asked, Giselle knew it was another question she’d never get an answer to.
“He is trapped. Frightened...” Angelica’s voice faded as her body brightened. Suddenly, she erupted into brilliant light. Her golden hair billowed around her head like a luminous halo. And still she grew brighter. Brighter.
Giselle put her hands over her eyes. Angelica was too bright. She wondered how Domi could stand to look at her, but then, his eyes must be closed too.
When the light streaming between her fingers disappeared, Giselle lowered her hands and opened her eyes. Angelica was gone. Domi nickered and nuzzled her shoulder, and she threw her arms around his neck. “What an amazing magical being she is, Domi,” Giselle said in a mane-muffled voice. “And strange. And wonderful.”
She inhaled his sweet horsey scent, then slowly released him. Together they turned to meander back to the stable. “And best of all,” continued Giselle, stroking his neck and looking up at the night sky. “Best of all, she’s our friend.”
Vivo. I am here. I am sorry, my friend. I cannot pull you from this mud hole. I know you are frightened. I know you need help. But you must be brave. The one destined to rescue you will be along shortly.
Yes, the one coming is human. I know you are terrified of humans, my dear one, but you must be strong. Your future is tied to hers. And even more, the survival of your herd depends on her, and her alone.
Be brave, my love, be strong. I will stay with you until she comes.
